Why is my Ping so high??

Featured Replies

A little while ago in this thread http://briskoda.net/tech-shed/i-love-telewest-broad-band/122251/

I posted my speed test and I had a high Ping. Since then i have done a reinstallation of Vista and wondered if it might change but it hasn't.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix it - Is it causing me a problem?

Start > Run

Type cmd

Type ping google.com -n 100

Then when it finishes please paste in the last line which lists the minimum, maximum and average "round trip" times..

I have a small Ping and no idea if that is a good thing or not??? :D Is it not something to do with the time it takes for the ISP or testing server to send a signal back to your PC, sort of a Sonar analogy??

If your Ping takes ages to come back, does it go ‘off’ and then your Ping becomes a Pong?

A high ping is a problem for VOIP or gaming, less so for anything else, unless the high ping is a symptom of another problem. Do you have a router/network between you and the internet connection? What's your speedtest result now?

My current test is -

and as you'll see from the other thread SWMBO's on the same network is much lower. Since I did the previous test I have re installed Vista and changed the wireless card so no change with those.

Ping statistics for 64.233.167.99:

Packets: Sent = 180, Received = 180, Lost = 0 (0%

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 114ms, Maximum = 253ms, Average = 127ms

Are you on wireless stu??

Is this for the command line? Can't get it to work

Are you running anything such as McAfee security centre or other software-based firewalls on your PC? Is the windows vista firewall enabled? If so could you try temporarily disabling the firewall and running the same test again?

Yep, like the ping suggestion further up:

Start...Run, type 'cmd' in the box, then the tracert command.

drop the http:// the line should read

tracert www.bbc.co.uk

FYI , here is my speedtest on virgin cable.

That is high. Can you plug the PC into the router with a cable and retest?

That's unusually high and is a BBC-owned IP address;

Query the RIPE Database

But I don't think it's your actual problem...

Your problem could be the wireless, have you tried hooking to the router directly with an ethernet cable.

I can plug into the router yes but I'll have to do it another time.

SWMBO's test was also done over the wireless.

From the same location in your house?

Maybe SWMBO's wireless chipset plays nicer with your router.

I'd suggest (as others have too) you try a cable connection to your router.

Does it get better if you move around the house?

When you changed the wireless card, was it the same type, and what is it?
