PCworld actually quite good these days

They have a new price-promise  Linky

If you find a lower price for the same product and offer' date=' we'll reduce our price by 110% of the difference – even up to 7 days after purchase.

This applies to prices offered by retailers within 30 miles of your local PC World store and the UK websites listed below. The competitor must have the item in stock and website prices must include delivery. Single unit purchases only.

To take advantage of our price promise, please telephone our sales team on 0844 561 0000 clearly stating the following details:

1. Your name and delivery postcode

2. The product, price and our product code you are interested in purchasing

3. The name of the Internet site or store offering a better price

Once the price is verified we can process your order immediately over the telephone.

Websites: items sold by Amazon.co.uk*(excluding Amazon Marketplace), Argos, Asda, B&Q, Comet, Dabs*, Ebuyer.com*, Dell, Evesham Technology*, Game, Gamestation, Halfords, HMV, Jessops, John Lewis, Maplin, Misco*, Play*, Staples, Tesco, Toys r Us, Virgin, Woolworths

(* Excludes Televisions)[/quote']

Can be pretty useful for collect-at-store stuff :)

presumably they have been selling v little recently.

That's something if they are offering to beat Ebuyer.

I've always like PC World. You can pick up some bargains every so often. A while back I got an external soundblaster for half the price you could pick it up for online.

I might, just might, be tempted along to Stretford then, for a browse...

No problems with PCWorld myself, but thats most likely because I work in IT and know what I want before popping in. I usually buy online with collect@store, and pop in to collect it.

Like Manny says, if you know what you want and don't need to ask advice you can get some good deals. I always cruise by their site when I'm looking for something, just in case they have an offer on. If I can get it on collect at store, even if somewhere else has it cheaper it can be worth it, as you don't have to pay carriage or faff with couriers!

Agreed.

If it's what you need and a good price (as they often are) then why avoid them?

What I'd treat with a lot of suspicion is the advice that their staff give to the unwary.

I use the Collect@store service quite a bit, always worth a look for a deal, whilst I'm in there I usually have sly listen to a salesman chatting shat to an unwise customer about how they need a 750 gig hdd to store those word doc's that the kids have too do for homework, Jesus that must be some home work those kid's do :eek:

Probably based on the premise that if you give an infinite number of monkies an infinite number of typewriters, eventually they'll write out the complete works of Shakespeare. Or, more likely, they'll spend all their time on Bebo, or surfing for p0rn.......

I purchased a computer for work recently from my local store.

Go in on the Thursday and buy one, they find out that they haven't got the one that I want, so they promise to get me one for the next day from another branch 20 miles away. I go back the next day and am told 'we did get one but have sold it to someone else', they promise to get one for the Saturday, so I tell them I'll call in on Monday for it. Monday morning at 09:45, I phone to make sure that it is there, I am told that they will call me back. 4 hours later I decide not to wait any longer for the call back and go to the store - no computer, we'll get you one for tomorrow. I tell them that is not acceptable as they have so far failed twice to do this, I'll phone the boss and ask permission to do the 40 mile round trip to get it myself. The conversation goes like this:

Me: Hello

Boss: What the f***k do you want?

Me: They haven't got it

Boss: Tell them that they are f***ing useless

Me: Shall I go and get it from the other branch?

Boss: Go on then

I am still kicking myself for missing out on the oppurtunity for having that conversation on the speaker phone.

By contrast I found the other store to be quite good, once they had verified my purchase.

About 18 months ago I got this laptop Vaio AR41S from PCWB and not only did they get it for me for the next day pick up, but they did a good price, beating Micro Anvika et al.

I bought my mum and dad a HP laptop from them earlier this year and the only downside is the laptop is running vista and they've got a few issues getting some older camera's and printers to work. Other than a top deal from PC World, even if they did try to sell me Norton A/V

Storing Porn ^H^H^H^H sorry, `artistic videos` in HD would take a fair chunk of hard disk space, and lets face it most of the staff in PCW behave as if this is their reference point for how to treat women.

Even more if you embedded it in a word doc to e-mail it.

  • 1 month later...

Just a heads up, but PC world are fast removing places they with pricematch or beat.

This is the list as of today:

This price promise applies to:

Argos, Comet, Jessops, Tesco, John Lewis, Asda, B&Q, Game Gamestation, Halfords, HMV, Maplin, Staples, Toys R Us, Zavvi, Woolworths.

added to -"sometime ago " I got a CD ROM from them - few months later it started to play up - went in ,CD ROM had date on it - I'd no reciept , but had bought it at PC World . reply "Sorry sir " - my answer " WELL PERHAPS Trading standards "- then suddenly found that it was all of three months old - new one given -perhaps advice in sticking up for ones rights /???

But taking a PC in to get a memory check / defrag / etc - no way - but then ,I see many/many firms taking the p*** out of many similar situations .

PC world and DSG in general have had to raise their game. They are about to get a lot of very serious competition in the form of Best Buy.

I like PC world myself. I also like Windows.

I was quite happy when I managed to get two extended life batteries for my HP Ipaq 2210 only a tenner each - not bad considering the original price is over £100. Also bought plenty of blank DVD's when they were really cheap a while back, think it was something silly like £2 for a tub of 50. So as you can probably tell I only bother with them when I know they're cheapest.

When are best buy coming over here and more importantly I wonder if they will give us prices any closer to the $ prices or if they will just try and do the old £1 = $1 trick

There's no way you'll get $ prices. If it was possible, retailers would already have gone there. Margins on electricals are very very low as it is.

They are already here if you know where to look. Actual Best Buy branded stores will be opening around June.

The prices will probably be competitive however they base their retail model on service so don't expect them to just be cheaper rather they should be a whole new retail experiance for this country.

I really have to agree with this.

I bought one of those Advent 4211 netbooks two weeks ago from a PCW store.

Several issues:

1. After a fruitless ten minutes trying to find a member of staff to get one from stock, I approached a short little grunt with bad facial hair at the front of the store and asked for assistance. His first reposnse was "Is there nobody over there instead?" Like you had anything else to do?

2. Aforementioned oik then tried to flog me the warranty package. That costs about half as much as the laptop in question.....

I thanked him for the offer, but explained that if it broke, I'd be fixing it myself as a) it's cheap and B) I dismantle and repair two laptops every month.

His response nearly cost him a *******ing from me and his front teeth, when, with a smirk on his face he leaned back in his chair and said "yeah, sure, but how good are you really?"

Cocky little .

So while the prices might be compelling, their customer service handling skills are about as adept as someone being tasered while juggling knives.
