Dartford river crossing

Featured Replies

I take it you always run empty then?

No, I usually run with 20 - 27 tons of machinery on. So....BTT.

Every time i have used the crossing when the bridge has been closed to high sided vehicles, ALL trucks, caravans, large vans etc get diverted through the tunnel (as it used to be before the bridge was opened) so closing the tunnels would not be an option.

I have also come over the bridge (just before it was closed due to high wind) in a Topline Scania with a flatbed trailer on and that was scary enough, going over a bridge on 3 wheels is not my idea of fun.

Thing is with big cabs, magnum, scania etc is they feel worse with the cab moving about. I have almost peed in my pants in severe winds once, i thought the cab was going to get ripped off the chassis.

So are you full time trucking Dave? Or do you still keep your hand in with the Fine Fish and Exquisite Chip emporium?

Sorry for the brief interuption?

Well, ever so briefly before we get BTT :) - full time trucker, chip shop under offer. Ill wait and see if the economy self destructs, or recoveres before i decide what next :)

which is longer severn bridge or dartford? as ive been across the severn in high winds in a lorry all lanes were mine as the vehicle didnt want to stay in one lane and i didnt fancy swimming either.

The Severn bridge is far longer (and dearer!) but I'm pretty sure Dartford is higher.

I'm fairly sure the Severn bridge (and second one) were paid for looooong ago... but I may be wrong. And I object to £5.30 to cross it, as well :(

Likewise i object paying to get INTO Wales ;)

BTW it's £15.90 in a truck

Yes but why no toll on the way back?

Could you imaging the bloodbath after we english have called them all sheep shaggers trying to rummage for our change?

do the toll booths have chip and pin card readers or is it cash only??

Cash only, thank god, imagine the tailbacks if people started paying by card! its bad enough when they have to pay with a £20 note.

reason you dont pay to get out was no one would stop either being chased out for making sheep noises or you realised how crap and wet the place is and wanted to get to home soil asap

however i have noticed on leaving wales the police wait by the toll booths to get those pulled up on anpr.

You can pay for the M6 toll by card, all you do is insert and remove your card. No pin, no signature. They could use the same on Datford crossing.

Same as the toll booths throughout europe, no need to enter pin. Pop card in, machine spits it back out again, barrier opens and away. The whole process takes a few seconds, and is quicker than paying cash. Best of all, the locals tend to avoid them so there are never any queues especially in spain.
