more on cruise

Any comments on this one? Came up M23 yesterday and put on cruise control, all working fine. Had to switch it off through some congestion, then went to go back on cruise and found it wouldn't. Tried several times but it would not hold the road speed when set.

Later in same trip, had a brief hold up, so switched the engine off, then straight back on again. When road was next clear I tried cruise and it worked fine!

It seems almost the same situation as the rare occasion my ESP comes on for no reason - and won't go off till I switch off ignition and re-start.

Is this worth having investigated?

(When checked on diagnostics re: the ESP, no fault was found reigstered.)

Symptoms of the common issue with the stalk.

You'll need the stalk replaced.

OK - can you give me a rough idea of cost of that job?

Are you not under wty then?

Main dealer I'd say parts around £65 plus an hour or so labour. It depends on if they've done it before and they know how long it takes.

i occasionally had this problem with mine, found vag com sorted it by taking off the cruise and re applying the cruise and it cleared it, worth a try before visiting the steelers. i did it last year (around the maxi dot time stu) and since then i dont think i have had another problem with it.

My cruise has been on/off for a while now, as I rarely use it I have not done anything about fixing it. The last time it worked for a short time was back in June, when it decided to turn itself off doing 140kmh in france. I wondered what was wrong at first as the car was slowing down and realised that the cruise light on the dash had gone out.

When turning off the cruise, you lightly push the little switch on top of the stalk to the right. Push it too far and the cruise in disengaged.

On start up again, all is reset.

Could you have perhaps pushed the little switch on top of the stalk a little too far to the right and disengaged?

Hopefully it is as simple as that for you. Good luck.

Tried it a few times on and off coming home today and it seemed okay. I assumed if you switched it off (small top switch fully to the right) and put it on again later (top switch to the left and click the stalk end switch) it just started working again. Always did before.

Anyway, at present it seems okay but might be the start of a dead stalk I guess. I'll keep an eye on it. Don't get to use it too often around here anyway!

I had my Cruise stalk replaced under warranty last year as it had become increasingly unreliable.

However I still very occasiaonally have the problem of it not setting. I have found that just touching the brakes will get it ready to work again i.e. the next time you press Set it will work.

I think this is because the system will have cut-out originally when I first braked and then for some reason (faulty sensor maybe) thinks you are still braking and therefore refuses to set. Actually pressing the brake pedal gets thing back into sync.

I had these symptoms on a Vectra (yes...a vectra... and it was pants!).

They had to replace the whole pedal box!

Hopefully, you won't have to go to these lengths.

When I came out of cruise mode I did it by switching the top switch off, not by braking. When I went to go back on cruise I did it as per when you first set for cruise, i.e. using the top switch then the end switch.

I noticed (later when coming home) that it set easily if I kept my foot on the throttle while using the setting switches. If I came off the gas, say at 70 mph, and set the cruise, the speed just kept going down.

Like I say, I'll keep a check on it and let Clarion play with it if problem continues. Their charges are way below main dealer and they do seem to know what they are doing, having been SK main dealers for years.

We also had problems with the cruise control working off and on so my dealer replaced the stalk and end of problem.Under warranty.

Seems mine might be going as well! Drove me potty yesterday. I kept holding the top switch against the spring tension to clear, but kept finding that it had not done so when I went to set it again. Irritating if you have set it to a lower speed, but downright dangerous when you have set it higher!!

It's a bit weird. Yesterday, though I couldn't get over 40 mph locally, it worked perfectly every time. Bl**dy cars!

IIRC I think you'll find moving the top switch a little bit does NOT clear the the current speed, it is actually a "coast" function, and when you press the top rocker switch (on the end of the stalk) it "resumes" the previously set speed. If you press the bottom rocker switch (on the end of the stalk) it will "set" to a new speed. So there may not be anything wrong with your CC (ie it is working the way it is supposed to).

If you read your owners manual it will tell you how it is meant to work. ;)

Hmmmm. read the manual virtually cover to cover only 6 weeks ago. Oddly enough pushing the top switch against the spring does sometimes clear, sometimes not....

....wanders off to get boook....................

My cruise was intermittent for a while then it packed up completely, VCDS has thrown up a cruise control switch error and the wipers are even more erratic than usual. The auto unlocking when the key is released has failed too.

Told my local dealer about it and they condemned the wiper stalk........

Since it recovered from the original trouble it has been A1. I took a chance on it being a possible switch contact problem and puffed a little bit of a spray down both switches.

It is a contact cleaner ("Super Servisol 10" aerosol) that I find brilliant in my hobby and since I thought I might have to go for a new stalk anyway, what the h*ll !

It is as good as new at present. Time will tell!

I have noticed intermittant refusal to accept a cruise demand. Sometimes it corrects itself but it has always corrected after switching off and on again. I suspect that too many clicks on set and resume at short intervals may confuse the system. Perhaps it will sometimes refuse a cruise at too low revs in gear 4 or 5? I can live with these occasional failures because it is SO useful on French autoroutes.
