I'm getting some serious quotes now on trading in my 2.0FSI for a new 1.8T, (both Elegance hatches). Apparently you can't get a new 2.0FSI manual Elegance anymore, at least through normal channels!

I've been offered 0% finance 3 years, and 3 years free servicing.

With metallic paint it appears, so far, it is going to cost me £222 per month.

Has anyone driven both types quite a bit, and can give me a brief rundown on the comparison (I know the 1.8T is 10bhp up, but that is all I know about it.)

Obviously I'm going to try to find one to drive first but I hear it is very good.

More power, more torque, and more economical

That's why manufacturers are down-sizing engines and adding turbo chargers. Increased efficiency, and increased torque mean less use of the loud pedal needed!

Apparently the 1.8T is listed as more economical on average by about 4 mpg, but I do lowish mileage so no big deal. The 2.0FSI can be amazingly economical. I've seen 49.8 on the computer readout once, on a fairly average drive, and usually get low to mid 40's without trying hard. I do use Tesco 99 though!

I'll probably close a deal, one way or t'other, next week.

Not too bothered about facelift. More interested in a sharp deal in these difficult times for retailers!

i would ring them this second and buy that, as theres no 0 percent finance or free servicing on my campaign this month!

mmm in the book it says the 1.8 t is better but in practice i cant see it as soon as the turbo is near (2-3000rpm) the mpg goes thru the floor, well at least in my mk 1.8T vRS it does and i am all for mpg.

2 different engines one is 10 yr old design with 5v per cyl and tuned for high performance, one is direct injection, variable valve timing and 10 year newer design tuned for economy and driveability.

You've got yesterdays technology.

Why I love my 1.8TSI:

• Has great torque from 1700rpm upwards.
  
• Has great fuel economy. On 98RON I'm averaging 7.0L/100 since new (6300km) and the last 200km it's sat on 6.6L/100km.
  
• Factory standard 95ron if I feel like being a tightwad.
  
• It's just an easy to drive, long-legged vehicle that's great for crap NSW roads & long distances.
  

I drove the 2.0NA Golf before buying the Skoda - the Golf was OK but didn't have the low-down torque of the 1.8TSI.

The new 1.8 TSI is very different to the old one.

I'd have the turbo every time. Much more enjoyable to drive.

The deed is done! A Cappuccino 1.8TSi hatchback on its way - hope to pick up about the 28th.

Be interesting to see the difference - especially as I've never driven this engine before! I guess everything else would feel roughly the same.

Have there been any other noticeable changes/improvements between 2005 and now? E.g. gearbox, handling or anything like that?

Congratulations, you won't regret it, believe me.

In my country the differences were:

- different fog lights

- AUX jack in the Jumbo box

- MP3 audio system

- 6spd gearbox vs. 5spd in my old Octy

Nothing big, really.

My existing Octavia already has 6 spd gearbox but I am looking forward to the new engine.

No, I hadn't thought of that. Bit late now, deposit has gone in etc.

I don't know what their mark up is but it could turn out to be a pretty good buy possibly.
