Bit of a gap after changing stereo?

Featured Replies

I finally got around to fitting my new Alpine head unit in teh VRS today... all fitted up and working a treat but there seems to be a bit of a gap between the tray thing and the head unit?

Its like the tray sticks out more than the head unit does, so theres an ugly overhang. Its not that I need the trim piece that goes at the top... I already have that fitted up. Its between the tray and the hu.

Anyone else had this?

Sound quality is  compared to the symphony one!

I noticed the same problem, and because I hate it when things don't look neat, I went for down the quick and easy fix route. I simply wrapped some black electrical tape around the top of the cubbyhole, and now you don't notice the slight protrusion of the top of the cubbyhole below the new aftermarket headunit surround. Others have said they replaced the cubbyhole with either the drawer or the cupholders which can all be purchased from your local Skoda dealer (and will assumedly fit more flush with an aftermarket stereo), but I preferred the cheap option which still looks ace. You'd never notice it wasn't part of the original cubbyhole design, and that's all I wanted. Hope you get it sorted.

I dont have a gap between the HU and the try and i have an alpine one

The reason for this is the design of the headunit you fitted, the sympony had a completely flat front and I am guessing the alpine has a curved bezel all the way round. What you are seeing is where the bezel of the alpine is angled inwards along the lower edge so you see the edge of the cupholder. The way I see it are you have 3 options. 1) put symphony HU back in, 2) replace the alpine with something that has a flat bezel or 3) get to enjoy the current hu and not worry about the cosmetics.

iv got the same problem. looks pure horrible. i got mine fitted at halfords but i think he did it wrong because he said the current voltage flowing all the time. so even when the key is out my headunit stil keeps playing. soi ahve to disconnect the face to get it to stop. did anyone else have this problem?

JCW, The person who fitted your stereo did it wrong. They either failed to swap the 12V feeds over or fit an ISO adaptor that does this for you. I would not trust a Halfords bod to fit anything.

You need to swap over the perm and ignition lives in the head unit loom. Take it back to where you had it fitted and get them to swap this over. Disappointing this wasn't spotted when fitted.

the guy told me it had to be like this and this was the only way to fit it. but after having two headunits installed that turned out to be faulty i was in no mood to care if it didnt turn off but its really annoying me now. he said it was a problem with all new cars from 05 on but when i think about it my dads octavia dosnt have that problem and its 2006

He told you wrong, and its a simple fix.

He does not know what he's talking about and is fobbing you off chap, as Tom and Mannyo have said (perhaps with more diplomacy) :)

Is there not a setting on the Head Unit to say off when key is removed?

I have a JVC which stays on when the key is taken out. I think it's only meant to stay on for 1hr without the key/ignition being on but I haven't tested that and always turn it off manually take the fascia off. Had to be rewired when I changed the original stereo for another Blaupunkt.

And no it wasnt fitted by Halfords, but I'm not too bothered anyway.

One issue I do get bothered with is the head unit slides into the dash now after a few months this is because I fitted the JVC one oops

Think I'll need a new radio cage or something.
