First winter with a diesel - quick question.

Featured Replies

Right, as the Fab vRS is my first diesel car ever, I am slightly concerned about the fuel freezing (waxing). Do filling stations change the temperature rating of the fuel during the year - and if so, how often?

I last filled up mid September - it was quite warm then, but now it is getting colder and I don't want congealed fuel in the tank:(. I have 2/3 tank left now - is it OK to just keep using it until the tank naturally needs filling or should I top it off as and when? It is likely to naturally need filling sometime in December FYI.

Advice welcomed (diesel newbie :o).

My dad (50) has had diesel cars for the last 20 or so years, has never worried about waxing diesel and has been through several "hard" winters with his diesel cars. We've kept diesel in large volumes in an uninsulated metal tank (before they were illegal) for many winters and not had any problems with gelling etc.

My advice? Don't worry about it. If we were in the alps or something I'd say to worry, but not in Britain.

The fuel suppliers switch over to Winter Diesel automatically, which contains anti-waxing additives. I wouldn’t worry as it would need to be a long long way below freezing before waxing should occur.

Thanks - you have put my mind at rest.

I remember putting 10% petrol into early diesels when Winter came. That was before Winter Diesel came along and modern diesels became so advanced and pernickety with the fuel they use. It worked great of the original Golf diesels.

I would never put any evil petrol in to my PD engine, though :D

I had better make this clear just in case anyone tries it.

DO NOT PUT ANY PETROL INTO YOUR MODERN TURBO DIESEL!!!

Wouldn’t want to get into trouble:eek: I was talkiing about over 25 years ago

A bit of diesel in a petrol engine never goes amiss though. 2.5 - 5%... works like a dream in the little petrol engined mowers we use on the farm!

Makes a hell of a lot of smoke in petrol cars from what I have witnessed first hand.

Oh I didn't say that there was no smoke...

I wish a tank of fuel lasted me 4 Months!!! haha

How on earth is your tank lasting 4 months!!!! At that rate you would struggle to do more than 1,200 miles in a year. If that's the case I'd sell the diesel and get something horribly un-economical yet tremendously fun!

Well, after my two holidays - each around 400 miles, the car is not needed so much. What with the dark days, rain and salty conditions the car stays snug in the garage waiting for the sun again. For the holidays though it was brill - good to drive and it flies up the Devon hills.

Trouble is, the Fabia is SO economic that the fuel does not get used up even when you try!

LOL - one tank a week minimum for me if going to my office ;)
