I am going to replace the router part of my setup with a buffalo whr-hp-g54 and sticking DD-WRT on it for all the features of the Drayteks :D Would go for a Draytek but it's a little expensive for me :( Gonna keep my Edimax as an ADSL modem.

Can you do things like WoL across the net or from the router webpage?

I'm quite simplistic, I like the idea of the built in Print Server :D

Yes it can do WOL..

its been rock-solid so far.. even with 1500+ sessions when bittorent is running (well, my brother was running that until i slapped some bandwidth restrictions on him  )

Stu.. even homehubs have print-servers these days ;)

Yeah but I can't get a Homehub to work Col.

I did buy a SH one but gave up in the end and tbh the one my parents use isn't the most reliable of devices.

What's WOL?

The latest firmware on my 2800 and it has been good as gold :-). My brother has 2820 (iirc) and that definitely need a firmware upgrade when he got his - googlemaps used to make it reboot!

I'm on 2.8.1 and noticed 2.8.2 fixes an Annex M issue, so if it fixes that for me I'd be over the moon. Can't see it happening though :(

What's WOL?

Wake-on-LAN I'd imagine Stu...

Steve

perhaps someone on here could explain all the functions on mine then  i got my first one when with an ex and her dad was a computer it specialist and showed me how to set it up. Now the latest(well about a year or two old now) has lots of extra stuff on it. managed to do mac filtering and encryption for wifi wotsit and have security cam set up with port and bandwidth restictions plus p2p blocking but its the other options i would like to learn about and in laymans terms.

Ahh I did wonder about that but wasn't sure if that was suitable for a router. I always associated it with waking a PC when a communication was recieved.

well it is along those lines... theoretically you could have remote access setup to the router, so you could dial in from somewhere, log into the router and have it send a "magic packet" to your computer to make it switch on.

Oh and the wireless is flawless too :)

You just want me to spend my money Col!!

why would he want to do that stu? its not as if you do that to the rest of us ;)

Well I succumed at about 16.20 last night, it arrived this morning!!

Not had time to plug it in yet though as SWMBO is still working and using the current setup.

Dayem - now look what you've gone and done......I'm looking to buy one too now because of this

...you realise theres a credit crunch on don't you?

NOT GUILTY! lol ;)

Very pleased so far, setup was extremely quick and the web interface is good.

A little complicated for my meagre brain so only just scratched the surface of the settings, anything you think I should tweak Col?

Have got myself setup on SSID 1 and maximum security, SWMBO can only have WEP on her machine so it's locked down with WEP and MAC for her machine only on SSID 2.

Excellent.. one slight "thing" ive run into, altho its more than likely my fault  ive been messing with the ADSL settings and it trashed my BRAS profile.. the exchange has dropped me back down to 3.5meg instead of 7.5meg :(

And ive also had a good "boost" by changing my dns servers from BT's to openDNS.. the router allows these settings to be propagated by DHCP :)

Wouldn't affect me too much then i only get 1mb!!!

Ho do you go about changing the DNS servers then?

Its under lan/general setup.. google opendns to find their IP addresses - your mileage may vary on this depending how good your providers servers are

how do i do ssid 1 and ssid 2 on the router? i want to have everything on max security yet the ds only allows wep and 802 b and the rest of the stuff likes the full security and 802 g.

I just found in the menu's that i had SSID 1 to 4 so I set them up.

You can bind the DS to the router by it's MAC so that only that device cannot connect.

thats what ive done put all my devices in on mac so only they will connect with security at wep because ds and wii dont take wpa2 or whatever its called and router runs on i think its called 802b/g mixed.

ive still got loads i could set on my router if only i knew how.

Well now got IPsec VPN setup an enabled, and dynamic DNS so i can always resolve my router when the IP changes :) - just fiddling about with the routing now as currently all internet traffic is routed through the vpn when connected remotely.

I really do like this router :D
