New router

Featured Replies

Well, ive just ordered myself a new "proper" router in a moment of weakness..

a Draytek 2820n

Seemed like a good choice is i am in many ways a power user, and the Sky/netgear router struggles under high load, especially P2p which would usually block connections for everyone else on the network.

it also provides VPN in hardware so i can vpn home from whereever i am, can have a HSDPA fallback, and also has a RJ45 wan port if i get cable broadband when i move house. and also powerful wireless N to combat next-doors silly belkin MIMO router

Hopefully itll arrive tomorrow so i can get it set up to play RA3 :D

Not bad - certainly a step up to semi-pro level rather than the usual domestic grade ones.

New gadgets rock !

Indeed.. it was a bit dear, but considering ive been through about 4 "cheap" routers this year and not been happy with them it should be worth the investment. plus Draytek is a british company and their support is fantastic.

it can even do Vlans for wired and wireless :D

That does look beastly!!!

Almost £150 too

Have fun with it

I've been lucky with mine - I've had the same Belkin .11g router for years and it's always done just fine. Very occasionally I'll need to reboot it , but that's about it.

You will still be capped though... FAIL!

You won the lottery? A new car that drinks vpower like its running out and costs more to tax than the GDP of Luxembourg, Moving house despite the credit crunch and £150 routers!!!

Or are you simply supplementing your normal income by being a prostidude at the weekend?

Good routers, we use them all the time for VoIP and they never fall over unlike D-Link / Netgear etc which require the odd restart every couple of months.

I've had so many problems with the 2800vn that I'm tempted to go and get a ZyXel to replace it myself.

Be interested to know how you get on with it mate, my Linksys doesn't seem to like Chrissi's work VPN and bails out.

Yep a draytex user, point to point vpn works very nicely, but then shouldn't it for the price...

Never used the sip stuff, despite buying it for that purpose, so many things have moved on since I brought it and now, to be honest it's just easier to use skype. But that's the old microsfot model isn't it, get mind share, market will follow knowing it's not that good.

A friend on another forum swears by them. He never buys tat.

The 2800 is known to struggle with the latest high-speed ADSL connections (specifically BE/O2 and other annexe M services) there are workarounds for it but the 2820 is a different adsl chipset so doesnt have the same issues. :)

ive been a draytek customer since we first got broadband years ago and onto my second one (might be third after seeing the latest models). yes i dont use half the features on there, but i can control what minitext sees, i can control how much bandwidth each computer shall have, when certain computers can run etc. Swmbo's mum got a sky/bt broadband router recently and i was shocked to how little security it has etc. the only grip i had was the wireless range, but since i got my latest laptop things have been better even through belkin does seem the best for wireless range.

Yeah I know but even when it was sold as an ADSL2+ device draytek didn't seem to give a monkeys that it didn't work.

Pretty bad really considering the price of the thing.

I think you'll be happy with it, but having gone from ZyXel to Draytek on recommendation I think I'll be going back to ZyXel for my next one. I've got lots of people on ZyXel routers and never had any issues. The attraction of the dratek was the higher tech, but alas it proved to be too good to be true :(

I found my ADSL Zyxel to be very poor, then again we have some SDSL Zyxel routers out there which have been rock solid. Must have got the 4.55pm on a friday one :)

Well its all installed now.. might have to experiment a bit for some of the options really are extensive.. it also seems to be coping better with our network traffic too, bearing in mind we probably have over 10 network devices, PC's, consoles, mobiles, media streamers etc.. and now ive got vlans ill probably setup an apache box in the DMZ and reinstate neo-vr.net :D

The latest firmware on my 2800 and it has been good as gold :-). My brother has 2820 (iirc) and that definitely need a firmware upgrade when he got his - googlemaps used to make it reboot!
