cleaning car this time of year...

Featured Replies

Hey guys/ ladies...

Just been out this morning, when the rain let up to try my newly purchased Gilmour Foamaster II Foam Gun, which i have to say works like a treat... but then the heavens opened again... what i'm leading upto here, is any type of a wash at this time of year better than not bothering at all...

as i managed to rinse after foaming and thats just about it... no garage you see or car port :( so how do you wipe dry when its raining lol

argg weather

Personally I just carry on washing and just get a bit wet :D The neighbours think i'm nuts

There is no need to dry a car when it is raining as the white water marks dont appear. Just foam, wash and rinse - JOB DONE

yeah i get the same funny looks from passer's by... the blk magic octy is a nightmare to keep clean though at best of times let alone these weather conditions eh lol

i guess the major thing is to get road grime, salt and possibly grit off to keep the paint as good as can be over the winter months.... would so love a garage though :)

i was and rinse as normal and use the AG spray wax which can be used on wet cars.

AG spray wax.. do tell me more :) i've been getting all of my cleaning products from polished bliss so far (quick and efficient service)... not sure if i've seen AG spray wax on their site though?

I must have spent about £250 now on cleaning gear :o and still aint got a polisher yet!

Personally I'd say coming up to winter find a dry day and give the car a really good going at then use an all in one such as AG Super Resin Polish or Klasse All In One then put on a couple of layers of Collinite 476s wax.

Once you've done that you can then just foam the car and rinse it off and don't worry about the rain.

In answer to your original question, yes it is better to shampoo rather than nothing.

If you're feeling lazy just get the foam gun you have and cover the car with foam leave it for 5 minutes then rinse it off.

The main reason for this is to neutralise and remove salt and other nasty contaminants that will potentially eat away at the car. For this reason it's worth trying to get foam and a rinse under the car, especially the sills when you can in the winter.

As my newer car has only been mine for barely just over a week, i have had a look around it, and have got to say it is in need of a good session at some point, probably including a machine polisher. But that may have to wait until next year now.

I will however try to give as good a clean down as possible inbetween the rain lol

Mind you i have already brought somewhat of a shine to the exhaust compared to how bad it was (5 years of of road wear me thinks!)

im actually not even gonna bother this winter, the car was done in the summer with everything, the wax is topped up and there isnt any problems with the paint work or contaminents on the car that i can see. personally i think its also to late for winter now unless you can get a nice dry warehouse to do all the work in.

AG spray wax.. do tell me more!

think its called Aqua Wax, it comes in a little red bag with 2 micro fibre clothes (blue) and a white bottle with a blue square and i think aqua wax written on it. its about 7 or 8 quid but will last 6 months ish. i use it after most washes as its a quick way to remove the water marks and protect the paint work quickly, especially if you havent got much time to do it in and looks good afterwards when it rains. Can also be used in the rain and whilst the car is wet which is a bonus. A member called mark sargent did post up pics of his car after using the stuff the other week and i have pictures on here showing my car after ive used it too.

I'm always washing my car in the rain, and I get some weird looks for it!

I think all my neighbours have just settled for the fact that I'm mental!

It is so much easier to wash a car in the rain though.

Just get a £10 gazeebo from Argos to cover the car while you dry and polish it.

Mine hasn't been done in over 2.5k's worth of driving in the past month and a bit.

It's now filthy, but just havn't had the chance to get to it.

Will hopefully be getting a few good coatings of Snowfoam on before washing it next weekend.

thats the stuff, also known as express wax in trade guise. use it a lot too, after every wash on both cars hence having recently bought a 5ltr bottle for not very much compared to the retail version in halfrauds! gives good beading and a quick way of protecting ure car and giving a good finish too.

It also gets interesting when the temperature drops a little bit more, and the water starts freezing round the car. Skating round the car is quite amusing :D

I try to keep on top of it as much as I can in the winter, for the reasons mentioned above. And yes, I've often just foamed and then pressure washed off. Can get it 90-odd % clean with minimum hassle and effort.

Yes it's always nice to get the car fully dry and maybe some Meg's Last Touch on there, but sometimes it's not possible or practical at this time of year.

We've been thinking that about the car for years! Thank God it was rescued

Yes only to familiar, pictures of my car at the start of the year when i did it show a few inches thick of ice around the car that wasnt there when i started and everytime water hit the car it would just freeze to the car. I wouldnt recommend trying to wash the car below 5c even if the water doesnt freeze to the car the waxing etc will become too hard to do. you need about 8c or above for a good temp for a good job.

That's what a hairdryer is for on the panels, and the paste wax tub in a bowl of warm water ;)

Seriously, I've never done that - but I know people that have...

Love cleaning my car,but....

for some reason it looks really smart covered in all manner of dirt.I've even thought about getting some black wheels...honest.

I will give it some proper TLC soon though...and yes,I don't like to leave a car caked in salt

Well...with all the heavy rain we've had...it's actually getting cleaner as the days go on. :D
