Chip an Windscreen - Idea of cost to repair?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I picked up my new (used) Skoda up at the weekend and am very happy with it so far.

But today I somehow managed to get a small Chip on the windscreen, which annoys the hell out of me. Does anoyone know how much it usually will cost to fix? I never had to do it before. It is a pretty small one (probably 4 or 5 mm), but it is in my view. So I would like to get it fixed.

Regards,

dsab

Check your car insurance policy, as it may cover it. If it does, then if it needs replacing it will be up to the cost of the excess. If it can be repaired likelihood is it should be FoC (may need to check the small print there though)

If your policy doesn't cover it, then depends entirely on the vehicle. I've used Autoglass in the past, and they're very good. Cost to repair is (I think) around £80. Replacement will require a quote.

Agreed on the insurance thing although I'm never convinced this "won't affect" your future premiums.

You're the first person I've ever heard praise Autoglass. Ever in the world, ever in the world, ever.

Hi Foxy, when I was getting the Superb I had had WS insurance on my Vectra, it was costing £60 pa extra but the screen was £600 at Autoglass plus I had a £75 excess, so before I bought the Superb I priced up screens, the price I obtained was £160, so I don't bother to insure it anymore, but the only effect it should have is the excess, policy shouldn't load due to a claim.

I've used them 4 times in the last 9 years (gotta stop driving through gravel pits, I really do). Each time, they turned up at my office, as requested, and three times replaced the glass, once repairing a chip. Always had good service, on time, and no hassle with payment/insurance claim.

That said, it might be because I am a "business" user (ie, my company pays, and my AA membership is registered to work, not to my home), so perhaps they treat business customers better (wouldn't be the first time I've known that happen).

This may be the nail on the head.

All the reports I've heard have been private companies...

Still it's hard for me to directly comment personally, I've never used them. My windscreens tend to outlast my cars

I will always praise autoglass, having used them exclusivly to replace or repair a few screens on various cars over the years with no issues whatsoever.

My premiums have never been affected by repair or replacement of glass.

Insurance policy certainly needs checking - but most will pay out, less your excess, without impact on NCD.

Some (like CIS) will not even deduct the excess, if it is a repair rather than replacement

- but you WILL need to use their appointed repairers.

I've had to make two claims on my windscreen for chip repairs in the last 3 years. It was on my old Peugeot. But because it was only repair rather then replace, there was no cost to me. The actual cost charged to the insurance company was £64 for the first one (there was about 3 chips repaired) and £50 for the second one (Autoglass), which was for one nasty chip.

I think they are a lot better than the one that the skoda dealt with when i had a new screen.

We've recently had a screen replaced by Autoglass in Edinburgh (Gyle Ind Estate)and they were first class.

It's a long story that I've wanted to post for a while but is still ongoing through my wife's insurance company. We used National windsceens in July for a screen replacement and the horror stories are still being resolved at the moment.

These included leaking screens broken wires and damged trim.

Like I say I'll post once the work is finalised as we are waiting on interior trim pieces to be replaced that are on back order from VW.

All I can say is be careful who you use and try to find someone local who is recommended as if you use a bad one it can be an absolute nightmare.

Over the past 10 years or so I've used Autoglass (mandated by insurance) to replace rear screen seal on a 1994 Fiesta (stupid Ford just did not get the seal design right originally so the rear screen kept sneaking out!), fix chips on next Fiesta, then a few years later replace front screen as it had got peppered by winter grit and fix chip on Passat - each time it was okay!

Budget Windscreens did a great job replacing windscreen on my wifes car and the price was reasonable too.

Recently discussed this with Churchill and Direct Line. If you've had a windscreen repair, you MUST declare it future insurance quotes. It may not affect your noclaims, but it goes down on record as a glass claim. If you dont declare it they're likely to try and wriggle in the event of a claim.

Made £10/yr difference on my first claim, +£40 with two claims.

Hmm, I forgot I posted in this thread...

Despite my comments about Autoglass I had a screen replaced by them not long ago on my Superb. Wasn't exactly stellar service and the call centre operative was a pellet, but the actual screen was a good job.

Oh, except they didn't replace it with a top tint screen (which it was OE) which annoyed me so much I bought an Audi, ha.

Seriously though, check it.

I've always used Autoglass and I've had no problems whatsoever with them. Used them on various makes of cars in the past and just recently again too. Never increased my premium, and never declared it either.
