Cold Start Problem

Featured Replies

For some reason I cant post in the 'ask tech' section so I've stuck it here.

A problem

My Skoda wont start, particularly when its cold.

Open door - insert key - turn - nothing??

Recent new battery, which is fine (checked lights etc) - mechanic says starting motor is fine.

The problem is getting worse - happened once four weeks ago - then sunday monday and tuesday - today i cant get it to start at all

Any Ideas??

Ah your skoda, I know the one ......Yes it's a ..........Skoda

Help me out here, my crystalball is as knackered as your skoda.

Do you see where I'm going with this ??

:P:P

Ah , could it be a Fabia 1.2?

It could be the fuses on the top of the battery

Check those to start with

Sarah

I know I know .....................Moved too fabia 1

Ahh yes - Sorry - its a 1.2 petrol 2003 Fabia.

Like i said turn the key - nothing - its started now, after about 100 turns - seems better when its warmer?

turns of the key that is, not the engine, which dosnt turn at all

Could be either an intermittent immobilizer or bad battery earth connection.

Either will probably log a fault code, so have ECU read for fault codes.

Also listen for a dull click from engine bay when it wont start. If you hear a click it's not the immobilizer, and more likely the solenoid for the starter sticking.

could be a sticky solanoid try tapping it with a hammer or somthing solid the next time it happens.

check the connectors on the starter, they are clean and tight..start looking for a starter motor..

I had a similar problem about this time last year. Most of the time the car would start normally but occasionally and always when weather was cold I would turn the key and nothing.

In the end I replaced the ignition switch, easy diy job and cost me about £15, no trouble since.

Hope this helps

I'd go for that - this forum is littered with stories of the woes I suffered until I realised the connector on the negative terminal on my battery was loose! Fuses are unlikely as they'll make for a all-or-nothing fault rather than the intermittent one you're suffering. Also, the fact you have a new battery suggests an issue with the connections, because the clamps can be tight without there actually being a good connection on the terminal. You need to slacken the cinch bolt completely, push the clamp as far onto the terminal as you can, and ONLY THEN tighten the bolt using a spanner, not a pair of pliers! (Can you tell this is the voice of experience?! ;):D ) If you're still struggling, use a broad flat-bladed screwdriver as a jemmy to open the clamp a bit more once it's loose, and then try attaching it again. A bit of conductive grease will help too (I believe Vaseline works if you don't have any to hand, but I'm not 100% on that...)

HTH

It was the ingnition switch - many thanks everybody

:)

Pleased to hear you are now sorted and it wouldn't have been to expensive.

Nice to see someone come back with the solution after being helped. Seems just lately that peeps are posting problems, getting lots of help/suggestions then just clearing off!!
