Worried about resale value

Featured Replies

Ive been looking at resale values of octavia rs's on auto trader and on here and am quite worried as alot of them seem to be underpriced. Im worried when it comes to selling my octavia (which wont be for at least another 3/4 years) that I will lose nearly half the value of what I paid when new.

Does anyone else share my pain?

Also what mods would you not reccomend to do that may have a negative effect on resale value.

50% depreciation on a 4/5 year old car really isn't all that bad! It's just something you face with buying a new car...

It depends who you sell it to when it comes to mods - a dealer will mostly be interested in as standard as possible, whereas a private buyer might be attracted to a heavily-fettled car...

Rob.

Buying cars is the biggest waste of money ever, yet we all know it but still do it. I've wasted

I would say Forge DV, Carbonio Air Intake, ABD Turbo Inlet Pipe, WRC vRS Sills, 18 x 8 RS6 Alloys, Avon ZZ3 225/40/ZR18 would probably be the WORST mods you could make.

I DEFINATELY wouldnt make any of those if i were you ;)

:hilarius:

i have bought 2 brand nwe cars in the past and probably lost about 7k so far, considering that the cars only totalled 13.5k then i lost quite a bit seeing as one was 10 months old and the other 2 and a bit years. but ohwell it happens and as said we all know it

You lose 17.5% before you drive out of the dealers...

Like the new avatar, geoff. when i went online tonight it was zebedee, and as if by magic.. new one.

ps seen my new un.(ugly bu99er aren't i).

cheers

True live is too short too worry about loss, its about enjoying!

Dave dont think ill get a wrc spoiler though now. I thought my current mods were very subtle, apart from the whhoooossssh pttttsssshh :)

Mike, 50% over 4 or 5 years is excellent, most cars struggle to retain that over 3 years, so if that is what you are thinking it will be worth, then I wouldn't be concerned. It's just a fact of life that cars are money pits. The only way not to lose serious cash on a car is to buy a shed or a classic, neither of which really appealed to me. Mod wise - you just have to try and sell it to a fellow enthusiast, or, if you have the original parts, put them back on if possible and try and sell the car as standard and the parts by themselves (easier said then done I know). You might have a problem on the wheels front though... ;)

I have to agree with the above post 50% over 4-5 year is pretty damn good not many car do that! I lost 50% in the first year on my saxo, still feeling it now. I've only won twice when it comes to cars, my first one I sold for what I paid for it after a year of use and bout 18 months ago I bought a 306 sedan which I sold at a profilt. Other than that I've lost on every car I have bought d'oh

vRS|List 21k 12Months 30Kmiles I paid 12....still over the top buy hey ho only 25 in the country

4x4|List 16k 6Months 9kmiles I paid 11500....sold for 9000 12 months later.

GT|List 17K 6Months 10kmiles I paid 12000....sold for 3k 2.6years later.

I don't do finance; straight repayment for the whole lot so yes I am concerned about repayments which is why this one dies with me or on the track, I should not of sold the GT...will not make that mistake with the RS...in two years it will owe me nothing (barring the 11k I paid for it) Then we shall start over..who knows what will be around then...perhaps even disel will be eclipsed in performance by hyrogen, that would be a nice thought.

cars are for driving and enjoying thats what we pay our money for.

Ok,depreciation is a worry but we are not losing as much money as buyers of other makes due to lower original purchase price.

my brother has a Audi S3,he paid

Dunkx how about we swap back lol. Got any pics yets, ps there is a north west drive on thurs if your up for it.

This was on the top gear web site:

City Rover loses 75% in four months!

[August 2004]

spacer.gifI was interested to see that Rover wouldn't let James May road test the new City Rover a few weeks back on Top Gear. Was it because they have a concern that his opinion would deter people from their new baby? Well, they obviously have the same opinion themselves...

I work as a salesman in the motor trade and last week a customer came in to part exchange his 4-month old '04-plate City Rover with a paltry 1800 miles on the clock (because the ride was terrible and he didn't like it).

It was pretty much top of the range, immaculate with a/c, a good metallic colour with all the options on it and it cost my potential customer over

Who'd buy a Rover anyway ?

Not me! Although I do like the MG ZT.

Is the City rover a 25 with the plastic trim bits? For some reason I thought there 4wd.

That's the Streetwise...and yes, it is just a 25 with plastic on it, and maybe slightly higher ride height.

You won't see many CityRover's about, they don't seem to be selling too well... :(

How long have Rover had a plant in india for? What other rover cars are made there?

Since their tie-in with TATA I think, not too sure...?

Used to be a rover man through and through till my last car...disco 3.9V8 ES.

(The worst car I ever owned)

Glad I made the switch now though...can't remember the last time I filled her up...4 weeks and counting...aint sure? ;)

The more you pay for a car, the more you loose, hence the Audi loosing a lot of dosh and as for the Vauxhall..er enough said :D .

So you cheeky little Fabia owners have done very well indeed. Of course this assumes you paid list price for your car, though I suspect many Octavia owners managed to haggle a healthy discount :) .
