Noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

Ive had my vrs 54 plate 60,000 miles, FSH and cambelt recently changed, Standard car, for about 2 weeks now.

Very impressed.

The car is faultless to drive, pulls well (98 RON), getting about 31mpg mixed driving.

I have a faint knocking noise most noticeable on idle, and increases with revs. It doesnt sound horrific but just not normal. Sometimes it is less noticeable. Im going to monitor it over the next few days....it is definately noticeable on a warm engine.

Done a few searches but cant find anything relating to this noise.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

maybe exhaust gasket? mine went and got done under warranty at 25k miles.

Or a broken mount? They're notorious for that, due to the system being a hefty bit of kit, and the mounts not being!

Update,

noise is not present when car is first started. After driving, and engine has warmed up the noise is noticeable.

However,

Car stood still, noise present at idle, turn off engine and back on, noise goes.

comes back again after a while.

Is it a tic-tic-tic- kind of knocking..........lol

Seriously open ypur bonnet when you hear it and look for a black box on the left near your coolant bottle.

If it's coming from there don't worry they all do it, its just cleaning your petrol fumes.

HTH

I think I know where fatty5000 is going with this one.

The black box is the charcoal canister and is part of the emissions system. The purge valve in the top of the canister can make this kind of noise (and every other noise from a sharp click to a high pitched whistle). You shouldn't hear the noise until the engine is warm. The valve should only allow the vapours to enter the inlet (to be burnt) when the engine is warm.

this thread has been really useful to me as i was having the same noise and wondered what it was.

what happens if i disconnect the carbon cannister to prove the noise is coming from there. It is definately more of a knock than a tick but do suspect this.

When it does it, you'll be able too feel it knocking if you put your finger on it.

Not sure what happens if you disconnect it. Probably a fault code and EML light.

iirc it throws a fault, i did it back when I first got mine, never noticed it till id had it for a few month and I thought it was broken lol.

dont hold me to it thou as it was 3 year ago,

good luck findin the prob thou, if it is one which i hope not!

The valve is called the N80 solenoid, bit of useless info there for you.
