Sorry...another bloomin "remap, worth it?" question

Featured Replies

Oh no I didn't expect anything! It was offered to me by them just to try out so I thought 'why the hell not' :P It definitely boosts power (noticeably) and throttle response is very good. It smooths out the turbo lag low down quite well and has a little more kick high up. I can also here it building more boost too.

I'm generally loathed to spend money tuning a road car because even in standard trim the vRS has more than can be really used on the road. It'll do over 100mph in 3rd for example (on an Autobahn I hasten to add). If it was on road fun I was after I think something like my old Arosa was more amusing to really rag. You could rev the nuts off it and stay well within the law and it only had about 105bhp. I get my kicks rather expensively on track these days.

This is what I was driving for the most part of the spring/summer:

short video from Silverstone:

YouTube - UBRacing UBR11 - Formula Student '08 - Sprint Run

Designed and made (partly) by my own fair hand (bodywork and cooling system and a few other bits and bobs).

86bhp only from a restricted Yamaha R6 engine but 215kg wet weight giving 400bhp/tonne, but then that doesn't include my weight. With me in it p/w was more like 300bhp/tonne which is still twice that of a remapped Octy. Great fun and 1.65G in corners :P

sorry to hi jack but what sort of fueling problem could it be apart from split pipes etc. Would running higher RON fuel make the car rich?

thanks.

If you're running too rich it would probably be the lambda sensor I'd have thought. The ECU should be able to adjust itself even if there's a problem (it would throw up an error code if it was out of range and had to permanently trim fuel values). Either that or the map has got completely incorrect target lambda values but that would really surprise me since it's pretty basic stuff.

Mike,

not wantin to be nasty mate but there is a reason the trial is free, when it reverts back it goes to the APR std map which is wors than the octy std one. (I know, I tried it)

I didnt like the APR mape much plus now you got the APR on there you need to get it mapped by them(which is lots of cash for just a generic map) or youll need to de-solder the chip and flash it on a bench.

OR if you are lucky another tuner may have a nice handy bit of kit that gets round the encription. lol......

the octy being the most powerful car Ive driven, I love it and now Ive had the custom remap, it is even better.

We'll see, but I would be very surprised if they could get away with that legally. This is Awesome we're talking about so considering their reputation I'd be surprised if they were that back handed about stuff.

no mate Awsome are V V good but they use APR and I had the trial. before my car was goot but after the trial went back, she felt flat. not quite as good as she did before. I didnt really get full use of the trial as most of my driving was on motorways, but the dif was def noticable.

the main reason i didnt use APR is they are a big name, same with the REVO. I wanted a custom one and finally found one. the APR was around £400+vat ish. the custom one I had was bit less and custom jobs are much better provided you go somewere that knows what they are doin.(NOT ReDDot!) they were sposed to do custom remaps but dont think it was as gains were crap!

best thing is to see for ur self mate, might be diff from car to car. as mine was a b1tch to remap, so the tuner said lol. wasnt giving up power easily lol

Oh n i like the look of your summer toy mate!

I want one lol:thumbup:

You sure it's not that you got used to the extra power? It would be very easy for someone to get caught out if the map intentionally set the power back less. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have been on the rollers before and after a trial. Whatever, I'm happy at the moment because the poor cold running and jerky power delivery/throttle response have gone completely.

The car feels a lot more refined than it did. I can feel where the map is different, as I said, the gap from no boost to boost is less pronounced and you can feel it pulling a bit harder. I can see why a lot of people don't like it as the perceived increase in performance is hard to feel. It's actually too well done in many ways. The reason a lot of people will go for Revo maps etc will be because they will increase the momentary spike of boost giving the impression of more power. I bet that 99% of the time, the APR map is giving out more power most of the time. It certainly feels like that anyway.

I drive this car 75 miles a day, so a number on a bit of paper means very little to me. All my money that doesn't go on keeping the Octy running goes on my Caterham Roadsport B fund....

Did you get an afr graph when you got your custom map done? This is a good indiction if you have any fueling problems.

i lost 50miles to a tank with the same sort of driving after a remap (maybe even less aggressive aswell) 285 down to 236miles. (vrs by the way).

285 on a tank?...I must drive like a Grandad..mine usually returns 300 - 350 plus and I can say after the custom map at Jabba it is returning almost exactly the same.

As stated previously, I think you must have a problem somewhere.

since my custom RSTuning remap mine does seem to give bit less MPG but thhink thats coz I like usin the happy peddle more. still gettin around the book milage now though.

Mike, it may have been that, but i am confident that the car felt more flat then before. or it could confirm my suspisions that the fella that fixed the RED DOT map trouble(drove from london to cardiff ok then after a break she wouldnt start again) he didnt put a totally std map on but one that was very close and just as smooth. who knows?

Today was remap day!...

In answer to my own question - was it worth it?....Hell Yeh! :)

Really, really pleased!!...Jabba Sport were fantastic (when I eventually found the place..doh!)

I now know what people mean..the car feels so much quicker and responsive, it really does.

There must have been a fault on my TT because on it's max setting, the map on that thing was pretty much like standard but with this map on the Octavia it's just...well...awesome!

Pre map, my car made 192bhp on the rollers (with K&N filter and Milltex Cat Back) and after map it made (and I was shocked about this..) 239bhp with 230lbs torque.

The car is now mapped to run with V-Power but that's ok with me :)

Anyway, just thought I would let you all know and thanks for your previous comments.

Oh and Chris, if you read this..was great meeting you mate..hope you are as happy as me and had a safe trip home (and that your footwell didn't fall out when you booted it...lol - we were watching the Fast & The Furious in the waiting room, was quite funny) :)

Glad your happy & good to see the old debates resurface ;)

Regardless of the figures true or otherwise its how it drives that counts. Its only when you are up against a comparable car on the road that you will know how good it is & with my Experience of Jabbas work you will just keep grinning. Dont be scared of having a crack at some of the big Jap Supras etc, if you can catch them on the twisties you will slaughter them. 6-700 bhp turning up in 2 minuites is kin useless apart from on a long straight. Next time you come across an Audi TT 225 just wave as you leave them (assuming its stock)

Happy Jabba motoring

Stuart

I had bit of a do with mk4 golf diesel (probably 150bhp one) whether it was chipped or not i dont know but it kept up to me round a slight bend as the vRS struggled to put the power down in second. Third gear it regained some control and pulled away slightly and into forth where i was past it but then hit the brakes before things got out of hand and the speed limit exceeded although it wasnt a race officer...

If only the long straight came sooner id of even been able to chill to some music while gliding past.

lol, you are so right...I had a race with a saxo vts once in my Supra...I couldn't pull anything on him down a country lane! Those cars really are insane in a straight line but show it some corners and it's a handful.

Stef,

You do indeed drive like a grandad ;)
