Sorry...another bloomin "remap, worth it?" question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 51 plate Octavia VRS and I love it! I have fitted a milltek exhaust and a K&N filter. Apart from that the car is totally standard.

I have been thinking long and hard about getting the car remapped...however..

I have read on here loads of comments from people who have had their cars mapped, stating that it "changes the whole car", "pulls like a train", "best money ever spent" etc etc...

The thing is...I had an Audi TT a few years back, with an APR map (you could select the settings and change it back to standard if you liked) The thing was, when I had the car set to Optimax (the max bhp setting) the car didn't really feel that much faster that when in standard mode...in fact, hardly noticable.

My concern is that maybe I am expecting too much or maybe the gain in power was somewhat muted by the quattro system within the TT..?

I was just hoping that maybe someone could clarify this for me and let me know:

A: Yes, the TT has 4WD so the benefits of a remap are not as good as a FWD car, like the VRS

B: I am expecting too much from a remap

C: There is something wrong with me, of course I should have seen, felt much more power.

Thanks in advance all

Stef

I would say

D: The map on the TT was pants/faulty.

Hmm, maybe, although I had a friend with a TT and a different remap, who also said that the remap was not all that noticable.

I know that the Optimax mode made the turbo much louder but the actual delivery of power wasn't there to match the noise.

You may have had boost leaks ???

At a guess.

Good point...it was rather loud. I have owned a few turbo cars but the TT had the loudest whooshing noise coming from the turbo...apart from the Supra but that was a different beast altogether.

The difference should be night and day, so long as it's been mapped properly. Had mine mapped by Performance Torque, and it's made a massive difference! The car is so much faster with way more torque all the way through the rev band. Best £265 I've ever spent!

You can get remaps to trial. That why if you don't like it or it's not what you expect, it can be removed at little cost.

Yes, its worth it, It will make a massive difference BUT go to a reputable tuner, get it rolling roaded & preferably have a custom map. The Rolling road will show up whats actually happening & find any faults with the car. I have always used Jabba & had amazing results. There are several other good companies around though so do a search.

Avoid the bloke on e-bay with a lap top, a poor map can actually damage your car badly

Yeh, I think I am going to go for it :)

Jabbasport isn't too far from me and I have heard good things about them, so that's where I was planning on going.

Don't worry...ebay is not one I have considered :)

You wont be disapointed, If you can stretch to the custom map it really is worth the extra, the time on the rollers is invaluable IMO

Yep, booked in for a custom a week on Friday..got 95ron in the tank at the moment and want to use that all up and fill with Vpower, for a better map..then run the car on Vpower from then on :)

Just one last quick one (that I think I know the answer to)...will the remap make my MPG computer null and void..I'm guessing the readings on there won't be accurate after a map.

Thanks again

The MPG computer will be fine. It will only change if you change the size of the Injectors. Thats all part of the next stage of tuning when you fit the bigger Turbo ;);)

When its been mapped give it a good test drive & dont just rag it, drive it gently as well to make sure its smooth at all revs.

Ah ok that's cool. Thanks.

Will do :)

I'll post up my thoughts of the map when it's all done :)

Really looking forward to it now!

Do you have the full Milltek system fitted or just CAT-Back?

Our Stage 2 Software with full Milltek exhaust makes 230bhp and 265lbs/ft torque.

P-Torque stage 1 = £265.00 all in including before/after dyno runs

P-Torque Stage 2 - £325.00 al in including before/after dyno runs

Is it worth it? Ohhhh yes

Definitely get it done, but be a lttle wary about right foot action to start with.

Half a mile from the tuners mine took off so quickly I nearly put mine in the Armco while exiting a roundabout.

Just had my 1.8T Octy Elegance remapped at Awesome GTI...the change is vast...I would defo recommend it.

Awesome due a full diagnostic check before they do it... so any faults can be rectified.

Have a chat with them...very professional and good.

Remap is a must on the Octy, but one thing you should take into consideration is the clutch will probably need replacing not long after.

what are you talking about????? why does it need to be changed soon after. The clutch will be fine after a remap no probs

I think your clutch must have been on it's way out before your map.

Shop around for sports cats, there are vast price differences. Blue Flame are worth considering as well.

I had a full milltec on my Octy but before I sold it the car had started spitting flames on the over run so Im guessing the cat had blown out, it was knocking out 356 bhp so that might have helped its demise :D

re Clutch, any increase in power will have an effect on the life of the clutch, when it does go consider a stronger one but dont pay a fortune unless you intend to tune the car further. The corrado G60 clutch is a good compromise. Its torque that kills the clutch & transmissions & a good mapper can ease the torque back a bit if you want to prolong clutch life

Every tuner who knows what they are doing should do a fault check before working on the car. Its in their interest as much as anything. If they remap your car which has a fault & it subsequently fails from the extra load its IMO partly their fault. Thats again why custom maps are betteer as the car gets a before map run on the rollers to check all is well. Like most things in life you get what you pay for

356bhp!...haha, excellent, I'm sure that was amusing!

I used to have a 96 Supra..it was my pride and joy...that was knocking out about 650bhp and the tripple plate clutch in that was a nightmare to use!!

There is a vid of it on youtube (if you're interested of course :))

No I understand completely what you mean about the clutch...it's just I would be suprised if one went due to a stage one map..it all depends what state it's in pre-map I guess...maybe that bit more power was enough to finish it off in the case stated above.

My old Octy was a 4x4 so was capable of handling the power. I built it for the Cannonball & a few similar events. Twas a giggle beating Ferraris & the like in a Skoda

Mine toy of choice is currently a 350Z Twin Turbo, a mere 480 bhp but the twin plate Carbonetic clutch is a real pain

350Z..one of the best sounding cars ever imo :)...love em!
