Dirty Tailpipes (oooer)

Featured Replies

Can anyone (detailers i.e. Baker etc) give me a top tip on cleaning dirty tailpipes (oooer :P)

My Milltek Exhaust tailpipes are rather dirty with road grime and soot etc. So much so to the extent that they look like they are painted Matt Black:mad:

I was after some product or tip that will clean the muck off without damaging the chrome finish.

If it's just a case of elbow grease and perseverance then lemme know

Cheers

Try some soapy water + alloy wheel cleaner first to get the loose stuff off, then Autosol to get it all sparkly.

Shoot me now but I used T-Cut  , got rid of all the grime and sparkled like new afterwards. Used it for 3 1/2 years on my chromed exhaust and never did it any harm

elbow greese and then autosol or autoglym metal polish are pretty damn good.

A vote for brasso from Ed

Got to agree with AndyVR6, Used in combination with a toothbrush.

Autosol, Worth the effort (But easier than bulling your boots)

I use Brasso on mine, brings it up nicely. But as it's slightly abrasive I don't use it on the outside, that just gets done with car polish.

Does that mean i can get someone else to do it then as i usually do that with my boots :P:D

Third vote for brasso over here...

Have tried autosol - just doesn't compare with brasso.

Rank does have it's privileges :rolleyes:

Tinfoil and metal cleaner such as NXT/Autosol etc, sounds weird but works a treat.

If you dont have metal polish around then Autoglym SRP does a fairly good job combined with the foil too ;)

if you need something a bit stronger, use this !.......note its 00 grade so wont put loads of scratches in your pipe !

#00 Wire wool

Wire wool and Autosol.

Another vote here for Autosol, but I'd just use a microfibre cloth rather than wire wool :)

Zildjain cymbal cleaner:)

brasso as recommended to me by baker21

Usually I clean it down with Virosol, then either Brasso or Meg's Metal Polish and a rag.

that #00 stuff is nothing like normal wire wool

Autosol , Belgom Alu, Mothers Chrome Polish, Luster Lace are all great products. Whilst I am a crap detailer, I am pretty good with metal polishing :)

Did all this polishing by hand on the ol' priller

That is lovely Tony.... but not as lovely as those slippers.

Steve, I think thats pipe and slippers :P

Easy you two :)

It's a tradition on the UK VTR List were I am a mod' that you can't post a picture of your bike without slippers. I think we should have something similar on here :)

Steve, it was a nitromors job, then working through wet and dry until I got to polishing paper, then a buffing wheel and 3 grades of polishing compound and then autosol, followed by mothers.

I just wish I knew what to do with paint ... I would be ok with a chrome / alloy car :D

 that's quite funny really, and I didn't actually think you'd done it by accident anyway! Who the hell came up with the slipper idea? Random would be a word for it....

That's a top bit of polishing though. There's something really very satisfying about very very clean and shiny metal

Sorry for the delay but I have been away in Czech for 12 days and only just got back.......:P

I use many things and it all depends on how bad your exhaust is but I have always found that Wire Wool with Autosol and then some Brasso with a microfibre works wonders........
