doh - roof too low

Featured Replies

opened the boot of my two day old (05) octavia in a multistorey car park - and then heard it thud into the roof

just seems to have chipped off the clearcoat layer in a few places. Is this easy to touch up. If i get it done at the dealer how much do you think they would charge?

Is it worth complaining to the council who run the carpark seeking damages ?

thanks

I did exactly that to my Vrs the very first day I got it. Took a big chip out of the tail.

I doubt you can blame the car park for it, it's up to you how high you open your boot. It was a surprise to me just how hight the boot goes.

Isn't there a building code specifying how low the ceiling may be in your area?

Only applies in "traffic" areas of carparks, not round the periphery.

Nice to see the claim culture is still alive and growing back in Blighty.

this happened to me in my own garage, so couldn't claim :-) been careful ever since. being a notchback it goes too high. was not used to it in the beginning.

Me too done the same in my garage with the damn up and over garage door.Did on my MK1 and now my MK2

This is my garage...

I had to pad the door.

There's a carpark here in Wellington where the floors are staggered - so if you go into the space forward your bonnet goes under the next floor!!

I couldn't park there as they also have a big wooden stopper which my front bumper would have hit, so the car didn't fit in the space at all!

...And how could you possibly claim for doing something that's clearly your fault for being a little careless?

Sometimes it's your fault - take responsibility!

i had to pad my last garage as i had done it enough times and that car was an astra.

Did this to my Octy II in the Metro Centre car park. Luckily the boot badge took the bump and only scuffed very slightly.

i dont think the roof being too low is my fault. I did not specify how high the roof should be - it is the car park designers fault.

And i dont think there being no signs warning that many boots will hit the roof is my fault either - i think its the councils responsibility to let me know the roof is too low for many cars

It's unfortunate, but don't think you can or should blame the council.

I don't expect there to be warning against the end space against the wall to say that as you are bigger than avg you would need to hit the wall to get out of that space, or watch the kerb, if you hit it you'll mark your alloys.

Reminds me of a scene in Snatch, "it was a funny angle", responded to by "when you reverse things come from behind you"...

The hatch on the Octy II is ginourmous and I guess it’s this that’s the problem. I have a small SUV thingy and it’s hatch is nowhere near as tall as the Octys was when it’s in it’s upright position.

‘With great space, comes great responsibility’:D

So it's the council's fault you couldn't see the roof was low? I think I'd have noticed the low roof as soon as I'd driven in and then made sure the boot didn't hit the roof. Or do you drive with your eyes planted to the ground 2' infront of the bonnet?

"Warning, corners may be bendy"

"Warning, kerbs may scuff wheels when driven over"

"Caution, this car park may have moving traffic, please watch out!"

"Warning, exit ramp may not be level, please use your brakes"

Where does it stop?

Exactly! Yes it's a new car and you didn't realise how high the boot lid was but that's not anyone else's fault, just mistake on your part.

I'm sick of this culture of finding someone else to blame for your own mistakes.

In all honesty, I'd be annoyed too. But I really don't think there is anyone to blame but yourself.

Claim?

No you should be more careful.
