Uneven tyre wear - juddering

Featured Replies

I have had a problem with my car juddering under braking, see here:

http://briskoda.net/octavia-i/juddering-when-braking/131576/

I planned to sort the bushes today but when the car was up the bushes were fine - look like they've been done fairly recently.

Did find that the nearside tyre was no longer fully circular, when i span it there is a definite high/low point wobble (wheel is true). The tyres are 9 month old michelins so i'm pretty sure it'll be to do with the car rather than a tyre fault.

I put both front tyres onto the back corners and the juddering under braking has dramatically reduced although there is still a little bit.

Does anyone have suggestions for the cause of the uneven wear - are the shocks to blame?

there does not seem to be any uneven wear on the shoulders etc,

cheers

andrew

Hi Andrew,

A major problem today is speed bumps. If you straddle the bumps when you go over them then it squeezes the inside edge of the tyre, and over a period of time they move out of shape resulting in low and high spots. Happens to the back tyres more than the front.

Is a very common MOT failure so advice to anyone when going over speed bumps, put two wheels on the bump and the other two wheels on the flat ground.

Also check discs as these cause juddering under braking.

Hope it helps a little

Richy:)

Tire balancing and tracking whats it like, i had the same with uneven tire wear didn't notice the juddering till the nurburgring run. It was heavy braking though, set of new rubber and a decent tracking seems fine now.

Well I never.... I have a similar problem with my Octy, especially on the rear. I straddle the bumps in the morning - have been doing this every morning for the last 4 years. Maybe that explains my dodgy rear tyres....

That's interesting... I straddle speed bumps every day, and have always centred it so as to avoid cabin intrusion. Might this send the tracking out? Perhaps slightly off topic, but my octy vrs has started to pull to the left. New front anti roll bar recently done at impossible, and had the alignment checked but all was within factory spec. Still pulls to the left... Could this be down to uneven tyre wear alone?

However thinking about it, surely tyres are made out of material designed to flex and move with the shape of the road? Driving over speed bumps at a slow speed is surely on the same as driving overly a poorly or patched road surface at higher speeds (ie. NSL).

Maybe if I spent all day driving over speed bumps I might expect to see the inside edges of my tyres wearing, but not for just driving over 5 or 6 in the each morning. I find the inside edge does not show even wear - it alternates between every 2 tread blocks to make life even more confusing (ie. worn - notworn - worn - notworn - etc)

I thought that going over speed bumps with just two wheels was a sure fire way to cream cracker the suspension. If you straddle them at least the forces are the same on each side.

and is much more comfortable - most speed bumps around here I can straddle and not really know I have driven over them, but they are in 20mph limits, so it is not like I am really abusing anything.

A guy i work with used to work at a tyre place and told me that the Octy's had a habit of skipping at the rear which caused uneven tyre wear.

That sort of sounds more like what mine is doing, but is is only wearing the inside edge of the tyre.... Should I stick in a couple of concrete blocks in the boot to prevent the skipping, or is there a better solution (one that does not lower my mpg). It had new rear shocks about 18 months ago, and new rear tyres since then as well.

The only reason i know is that best friend owns garage and is carrying out tests everyday. Showed me a few tyres that had been changed that week for same prob.Various cars. I had my car tested two weeks ago and he showed me where my tyres had started to move out of shape (thankfully not bad enough for a failure). My tyres have done 10k on the back and are twelve months old so 5-6 mm tread still on them.

The speed bumps don't cause increased wear just the moving slightly out of shape.

I have been the same as I straddle bumps so as to make journey smoother and I only go over six every morning by local school. So if anyone is a tyre expert we all need the answer.

I would have thought it was the brake disk worn uneven causing the tyres to wear uneven. If speed bumps were causing that my car would be in a bad way, you want to see the bump getting in and out of my drive, and I have never had this problem
