Used car values...who do I believe ??

Featured Replies

Trying to sell my Octy vRS at the moment ..

http://briskoda.net/skodas-sale/stunning-mk-1-octy-vrs/127712/

and believe I am asking what I belive to be a fair (not cheap...but fair) price for it.

(You get what you pay for !!)

I ran various price checks using the thread at the top of the " SKODA CARS FOR SALE" forum on here, and the prices were all over the shop, ranging from £1300 at "MY CAR CHECK.COM" to £3,500 at "PARKERS".

I had seen a potential replacement advertised on the Auto Trader website at a garage in Newcastle, so to possibly save myself a 200 mile round-trip wasted journey, I asked the salesman to give me a valuation on my Octy over the phone.......he allegedly looked it up in his Glass's guide, then quoted me £1,200 :eek:. Suffice to say I won't be going to Newcastle !!!!!!!!

Which price checker do I believe ??????

Prices are wild at the moment. I have several valuations on my Superb...

Lowest - £800

Highest - £1500

1.8T Comfort, ex police, no history, 112,000 miles.

Its now gone back to the finance co as I had just paid half of the balance.

It all depends on what you are buying too. My best mate has just traded in a 55 plate Volvo S40 2.0D SE with all the extras (satnav, phone, tracking system etc) paid 25k in 2005, got offered 6k for it against a C70 at a car supermarket and got 8,500 against a £26k Impreza STi at a dealer.

Good luck with the sale!

Glasses says £2080 p/x assuming excellent condition. So about £3195 for a private sale would be what I'd ask, and be prepared to accept around £2800 for it. :)

Dealers don't want p/xs at the moment, they are pricing them assuming they will be stood around for 6 months, and yellow isn't a desirable colour unfortunately :(

Good luck with it though, your one certainly does look well cherished!!

CAP is about the most reliable guide, and Glasses is the next best. :)

Very difficult at the moment, and yellow is a 'bad' car colour for most people.

It doesn't matter what any price guide says, if the phone isn't ringing and people aren't viewing, you aren't advertising effectively and/or your asking price is too high. If you really want to sell you will just have to keep dropping the price, at some point the bargain vultures will start circling! I'd start by dropping the asking price to just under £3k. I'd be surprised if you didn't end up accepting nearer £2k, and at that level you might as well just run it into the ground?

I got offered 37000 for my wifes 2005 Freelander TD4 HSE by a large dealersgip, well over 20k three years ago......rip off artists.

Managed to get 5500 privately.

I also sold my 2001 bectra 2.6 gsi two weeks ago, book price 1850 got 3250 for it privately 20 mins after placing the ad. It's just your luck and all depends on if your buyer is after the specific model and colour you have.

It's really a buyers market out there and the garages are all in deep poo....serves them right for taking the pee out of so many for so long IMO.

2nd hand cars are worth sod all sadly at the moment, great as a buyer though :D

I would think the £3595 would be what a dealer might ask for it, it's a nice example but you are in the want it market with it being high performance and in yellow, as for the trade book they hardly ever match up with what you get offered tbh.

I personally am never sure about Parkers.

As others have said though, sadly all cars are worth nowt and someone is going to get a fantastic car for the money.I was offered a poor price p/ex on my vRS which was another cherished fastidiously maintained car.Someone (on here) got a bargain.

I think enthusiasts sites are the best for these sort of cars both price guide and selling

Christmas is never a good time to be selling, people are busy paying for presents. The credit crunch is making things even worse, chances are a potential buyer might not even be able to buy because they will find it difficult to get credit or are reluctant to spend cash.

If you are not in a hurry to sell, I would hold out to the spring and try again.

The old saying 'something is only worth as much as you can sell it for' has never been so true at the moment.

I agree, the true value of a car is what someone will pay for it,not what the seller thinks its worth. In the current climate some people are asking ridiculous money for their cars and if they are wanting to sell will need to lower their prices,or keep the car and hope things get better. The housing market is the same, gone are the days of making a quick buck.People I know were looking at a house for £250.000 in August, but got cold feet and didn't buy, they just moved in last week the seller phoned them to see if they were still interested, they got it for £120,000.

Take a look at this and it will help people to see what's happening to dealers;

Used Vehicle Search - Fiat, Mazda and Suzuki in Coventry and Leamington - Coventry Motor Company

That is my wifes old car, p xd for a new Fiat 500 in early July last year.

We got £11500 for it and they originally marked it up at £12800 (if you look carefully at the picture you can see the price), it was then reduced to £11999 and it is now marked at £10499. The car is absolutely mint, it has the (supposedly) in demand 2.2 diesel (good economy, low tax, brilliant torque) and all the key toys. So when they sell it, say for £9500 they have taken quite a loss. OK there was some profit in the Fiat...but surely not that much.

Agree with other posters...your car is worth what someone will pay for it!...and that figure is currently decreasing rapidly by the week.

Dan

Got 4K for my 05 vRS Octi, 61000 and FSH, from a dealer. Was traded in against the general managers car though :D
