VRS Leaking Coolant

Featured Replies

My VRS leaks coolant. Around the plastic rim halfway down the coolant bottle there is a pink scum of dried coolant. It takes around 3 weeks to drop to the point where the coolant level alarm goes off so its not that drastic.

What do I need to replace? Is it just the plastic bottle, which I think is quite cheap

Thanks

Expansion tank and cap probably. Worth having a garage stick an exhaust gas sniffer into the expansion tank, just to make sure no exhaust gases in there (leaky head gasket).

Radiator leak is most likely cause.

Ah ha! The scum's on the outside. Ignore above.

Hi

I would have said the cap , or the seal around it

The seals have been known to wear , so not seal properly.

That allows it to seep out of the cap when warm

Try that first , they are not that expensive

just remember to replace the cap when the engine is cold

when I fill up the coolant tank some does leak out near the plastic clip thing under the cap.

everyone says its an easy job to replace the tank but without some sort of "instructions" I have no idea. Maybe if I buy a replacement it'll be obvious what needs to come out.

A friend replaced the washer bottle today. I'll check whether it solves the problem over the next few days

Washer bottle?

Seriously hoping you mean your friend replaced the coolant reservoir (to the left of the car as standing in front of it)

mines does the same... been like it for 20k... just fill it up with G12... who cares LOL

Just keep an eye on it, and if you have to top it up a lot then there is something wrong ;)

£13 for an expansion tank, or £2500 for an engine rebuild. I care :D

Well, following on from MoggyTech was saying, if this pressure vessel has failed, then it means its has a flaw, that means that even although no one has reported them then failing in a big way, this one might! Do you feel that lucky, for the sake of £13? Remember once it fails a bit more, the cooling system pressure will drop to around ambient pressure and the water will boil out of the coolant solution.

joke bud just saying it would be a good excuse to drop a 1.8t engine in

the coolant loss really is nothing at all... just drops from below max to above min like every 2 months... maybe i should change it but im too lazy
