Welcome to Briskoda. What car are we talking about? Fabia VRs?

To compare (if it helps) 5th at 90 in my TDI is just under 3000RPM. I only found ths out when testing on my private road. ;) Oh, and when it maxxes out at 125ish, its doing only 3500RPM.

90 tut tut.... bad lad

Yeah the vRs.

I haven't bought one yet but am very interested in one. Seeing as most my driving is done at 5am on sunday mornings i tend to keep a decent speed up :)

Im off to the local Skoda garage to see about a test drive later

thanks ppl.

To muddy the water further, there are 2 different gearboxes that I know of in the vRS. The one fitted to earlier vRS's was close-ratio but still a fairly economical box so you could easily see between 50-60mpg. I think the new box is much closer-ratio and members have been reporting significantly lower mpg's with this one, although I'm sure people with experience of each can give you a better idea :)

Is it different gearboxes or final drive ratios?

Denis where do we look on the vehicle documentation/sticker to find out which gearbox / final drive is fitted?

Will have a look at mine once I have a clue what I am looking for

I drove to work in mine for the first time today (3 days old!), on the motorway at 70+10, it was pulling 2500rpm in 6th = 31.25rpm/mph..... and so 90 should be around 2812rpm

at 2500 in 6th I am getting about 50mpg (300 miles on the clock and being run in)

Ive got the old-style extra long range box.. 80 is about dead on 2k so id expect about 2100 for 90.... with a redline at over 160 :D

So whats the advantage of the new type gearboxes?

Thanks for your replies

80/2 = 40mph/1000rpm

90/40 * 1000= 2250

Closer ratios mean you can keep the engine at near optimum revs right up through the gears. However a shorter top gear will mean more noise and less economy at cruise speeds.

In the 53 reg the RPM at 80 is 2000 in the 04 reg its 2400!

Having driven both the oldier and my 04 that sounds about right 80 was 2k in the oldier model.

Stokey where abouts in stoke are you from?

My 04 fab vrs 90=2750.

it seems to be 10 mph per 250 revs in 6th.

Not sure about speedo accuracy though.

Hope this helps

Jonno.

Gearbox type is listed on the sticker inside the front cover of the Service Schedule and on a similar sticker on the boot floor under the mat. Gearbox/paint number/interior equipment/engine output/engine code are all on the same line. I think you will need to speak to a dealer to find out what final drive is fitted. It's probably in the car data for your car which can be accessed on line via ETKA by inputting your chassis number into the system.

Do you have a problem sleeping then ?...........or is there another reason ?

Haha no, i race model cars, just most of the tracks are over 100 miles from me.

53 reg 2500 revs. at 90

Tom.

I must have a strange gearbox.

Found a nice quiet Private rd, maxed rpms in 6th @ 3350, speedo reading 129 mph.

Redline is close to 4500 .

So would i be correct in assuming that 6th is an economy cruise gear ?

Is your Furby one of the later ones with revised gear ratios?

Was the car still pulling at 3350rpm in 6th?

dse

Thats a good question about the gearbox.

The pedal was on the floor. Nowhere left to go.

BTW 90 MPH = 2350rpm in 6th.

Spoken to Scotts Mototune who have pumped up a couple of R32's, who explained that the rev limiter for each gear is set on the ECU. So I got to thinking , as my rev limiter on 6th gear appears to be around 3400 rpm, what top end would the car be if it moved to around 4k RPM in 6th ?

The fabia vrs (2003) pulls 38mph/1000rpm so 90mph=2368rpm,should still be 40mpg+
