Car washing and the damage caused

Featured Replies

Yeah, saw this feature in the programme on Monday. Good work at the gritwash eh? Sorry, jetwash ;)

Steve

i occasionly use the garage jetwash, but never the broom bit (apart from the front window), just squirt and go.

Good feature - but shame they didn't show how it should be done

Agree with that but great advertisement for 'Shine On' who are regularly on DW..........

Yeah I read the thread on DW. I only use the brush for the windows NEVER the body. Jet wash is fine for a quick wash and to remove some of the surface dirt. And way better than the other two mentioned.

Even if i wasn't in the valeting/detailing business there is absolutely no way i would take my car to any of them?????

If i had an old banger then maybe i'd consider it, if the car was worthless & meant nothing to me i mean?

I saw an Aston Martin queing up for a car wash the other day.... £90+K car????

Felt it my duty to stop & plead with the owner not to do it? Fortunately he saw sense & has now booked me in for an initial assesment followed by remedial work to rectify the damage that was already evident!

He honestly thought he was doing the right thing by getting it washed in the local petrol station?

I'm even worried to wash myself now!

fair play darren, most dont want to know!!

makes you weep :)

There was a lot of damage done as well

Fair play, but might have been useful to have him on for a couple of minutes longer, explaining a proper hand wash procedure, prior to him doing the bonnet correction.

Just what i thought! Never used the brush at a jetwash like you say gritwash! Never been through a carwash either and dont let muppets wash my car, ive always washed my cars by hand since ive been driving but have changed my method over the years.

Bit concerned by the scratches caused with the 'squeegy' in the hand wash, I use one and always thought there was no issues with 'em!

I would have thought they should have said the hand-wash WITHOUT the drying blade things would be the best bet..

My local illegal-immagrant hand carwash use mitts and shammys for the cars.. usually pretty good job.. yes i know i should wash it myself but i dont have the time at the moment!

(any offers? lol)

Same here

Plus hand washing it yourself gives opportunity to find any stone chips and the like on the car

It's not the silicone blades that do the damage? It's the grit that does! The whole idea of the blade was just to get the initial sheet of water off the car, using the minimum amount of pressure to take the water off!

Great on windscreens, windows etc but unless the car has been thoroughly washed, rinsed etc there is always the danger that some grit will remain on the car?

Another thing worth noting is that a lot of the local "wash for a fiver" centres dont rinse the blade out after every swipe?

I think if the wash process has been done correctly & the blade rinsed after every stroke AND mimimal pressure is used on the paintwork itself, it can definately speed up the drying process & can help to prevent water marks etc!

The idea is to get rid of most of the water, not all of it? If the blade screetches as you run it along the paintwork you are either pressing too hard or that panel is already sufficiently dry to MF or chamois!

Personally..... I wouldnt use one as the damage that can be caused doesn't really merit the possible time saved to dry the car properly anyway?

Also, there seems to be a huge difference in the flexibility & quality in blades??

Question you gotta ask yourself is... Is it worth the risk???

Personally i think not!

Completely agree mate...........

i occasionly use a blade, but lightly do each stroke and wipe the blade after each stroke, if in doubt i wont do it but see it as the same as using a microfibre cloth thats caught some dirt in that on the wipe. each to their own i guess.

Difference between the Blade and the Microfibre cloth is that the cloth will absorb the dirt due to it's depth whereas the blade will just keep the dirt on it's surface............

I have two of these blades in my detailing kit and haven't used them in over a year but IMHO if you have a decent Waffle Weave Drying Towel then the time to dry a car is just as quick and obviously a lot safer.......

Anyone want a blade...........

If you're offering one, then what's the postage on it?

It's a good window squeegy when the house has a conservatory.

Drop me a PM mate and we can discuss this further.........

So after reviewing this can anyone recommend a good wash it your self starter kit for around £50?

Obviously lot's of other suppliers available, and I am certainly no expert on detailing but I have

Meguiars Grit Guard and Bucket X 2 of these or similar, the grit guard is important.

Genuine Sheepskin Wash Mitt Eurow X 1

Huge 38 x 28 inch Waffle weave Microfibre Drying Towel X 1

Chemical Guys - Citrus Wash & Gloss X 1

ValetPro - Bilberry Wheel Cleaner X 1

A wheel brush would be nice, I have got one of these EZ Detail Wheel Brush

Like I say, lots of places to buy and there are some real expert's on here like Baker, Wardy and that Jockonese fella BiGWotsit :)
