Removing Glovebox

Featured Replies

I'm looking for some advice on removing the glovebox on my Octavia vRS to allow me to install my handsfree kit, I'v done a search and so far not managed to find any details about it.

Unfortunatly with it being dark every morning and evening when I go to work Iv not managed ot have a look.

I'm hoping its going to be fairly obviouse lite it was in the fabia, but if any one could confirm where all the serews are, and how many there are, that would be great, and will hamy my installation on Sat morning go as smoothly as possible.

'tis easy - First empty contents! Remove the end panel, then the screws (T20's) from the bottom front edge, then those from the front top edge on the inside - when removing take care to to damage the connector for the light - once the box come free yiou can get your hand in and disconnect the cable. The AirCon pipe just pushes on (don't forget to reconnect it), likewise the airbag switch cable can be disconnected.

If you disconnect the airback switch, do not switch the ignition on until you've reconnected, otherwise it's a trip to the dealer (or someone with VagCom) to reset the warning light.

Thanks for the info, and also for the advice about the air bag switch.

Is disconnection the airbag switch something i need to do to remove the glove box? the only reason I'm removing it is to allow easy access to install the phone kit.

It will depend on how big your hands are, what access you need and where you route the cables... You may be able to get away without disconnection the airbag switch. When I fitted my iPod i/f and permanent live feed for my SatNav I decided it was safer to completely remove the Glovebox, but then tested everything without reconnecting the airbag switch, so then had the warning light permanently on!

Am I right in saying that if you switch off the airbag switch you can disconnect the cable? Mine was on, and even with starting car it threw up a fault.

Btw something that might help you is that its quite easy to remove the panel beside center console. If you remove the ashtray (pull up gear stick gator, remove 2 screws and lift out), and look in theres 2 screws. One is for the left panel and one for the right. If you remove the left then slide the panel towards the front axel by about an inch and you can get the panel off. Theres velcro on the bottom so pop this off prior to sliding. Its also a good place to store Car kit stuff.

Maybe behind the climatronic panel, and as a bonus you also get easy access to the back of the stereo with just a short run of cable => better sound quality.

My understanding is that the switch much be connectted to the loom when the ignition is switched on - but happy to be proved wrong here!

If it's the same as the Golf, turning the keys in the ignition with the airbag lamp off = instant airbag error. Can't see it being different with the switch.

I must have turned the car on with it disconnected :o (it was a while ago ;))

Got same problem here - had ipod adaptor fitted and lads needed to take out the glove box, must have switched the ignition on with the glovebox cable disconnected - guess I'll have to take my vRS to the dealers then :-(

Worth checking the map within the VAG-COM section on here; the might be someone close by who could reset the light for you.

Replacing the airbag switch connector is a pain -easy to get off impossible to get back on.

Remove the two screws holding the airbag switch, and reconnect inside the glove box - then replace the airbag screws.

I found and removed the 5 screws (2 at the bottom front edge and 3 on the front top edge inside), but the glovebox still didn't seem keen to move much on my FL Scout. Please can someone tell me what's "the end panel" that is referred to here as needing removal (a picture would be perfect to help clarify)? Incidentally, because the glovebox seemed reluctant to move, I didn't bother disconnecting the aircon pipe or airbag and light switches, but I presume that the box should still move a a couple of centimetres at least with these connected?

The 'end panel' is near the door hinges. Just below the the air vent that feeds the side window blower vent.

It levers off from the small cut out towards the bottom of the panel.

Behind this is another screw that needs to be undone to get the glovebox off.

You might also want to remove the foam panel under the glovebox as well, but not essential to get the glovebox out.

There are two plastic thumbscrews holding this in. Get your head underneath it and you should be able to see / feel them quite easily.

Getting it back together is fairly easy especially if you follow the advice about removing the airbag switch to reconnect it then screw it back together (two screws).

Thank you very much for the guidance. I did wonder if that was the panel being referred to, but didn't want to start poking about in case I broke something! I will be removing the glovebox at some point in order to retrofit an MDI lead off the back of the Bolero and into the glovebox.
