I can't afford my insurance

Featured Replies

I'd just say sell the car and buy one again when you can afford the insurance.

Paying 50%+ of the cars value in insurance is mad

I'm with Equity Red Star, through brokers A-Plan (UK Car and Home Insurance Quotes From A-Plan Insurance.)

I'm 26 and last year it cost me just over a grand to insure my vRS, but that was with only 1 years NCD and two SP30's in the past 3 years. Hoping it will go down this year with another years' NCD and me passing my IAM.

As others have said, it's probably your postcode not doing you any favours, plus if the car is modified that will put it up. A lot of insurers put the premium up by % equal to whatever % you increase the power by. Also are they aware that you were driving before you had the accident or do they think you've only held a licence for the last year or two?

i use noel dazely mate im 25 3 years no claim bonus al mods declared £580 fully comp with a excess of £250......:D

if your insurance is going to be that high i would sell the car and opt for something cheaper:thumbup:

I would never entertain the thought of paying over £1k for car insurance... I'd rather walk than give those money grabbers my hard earned cash - why should I pay to fund those idiots who claim regularly??

How much is the fine for not having car insurance? I bet it's not as much as some of your quotes!

The government really needs to lay down some ground rules with car insurance, as it's beginning to get silly. We need to get rid of all these independant insurers and just have one standard system, like car tax with the DVLA. You just pay standardised amounts, based on all the different factors. It would be a lot simpler, people wouldn't get ripped off, and less idiots would drive about with no insurance.

You get your car taken off you, 6 points plus the fine. Then you either get insurance and get the car back or loose the car

That's not harsh enough! They need something to remind them to buy insurance...

Cut of a finger? Or an ear maybe....

That's IF you get dealt with by way of a fixed penalty. Fixed penalty for no insurance is £200 plus 6 points. If you're dealt with in court then the maximum penalty is a fine of £5000. The court can also imposed 8 points rather than 6 for a fixed penalty, or, if they really don't like you, they can decide not to impose points and give you a ban instead. The period of ban is discretionary, with no statutory maximum. They can also order that you be disqualified until you re-take your driving test, making it an arrestable and imprisonable offence (driving whilst disqualified) for you to drive on a road until you've done the test. You can also be guilty of the offence (and face the same penalties) for "permitting or causing" the use of a vehicle without insurance - so lend the car to your uninsured mate and you could be in as much poo-poo as he is...

Where the f*ck do you live?! Baghdad?!

Try Brentacre.

I can also reccommend Brentacre. When I had my TVR Chimera they insured me full comp with 0 no claims bonus (i'd had no preious accidents but i'd only been covered under a traders policy before hand) for £1300 at 25 years of age!! Nearest I could get to that was £1800 with the owners club.

I've got the Fabia insured with them and my Skyline engined 200sx.

I thought mine was high but after looking on here it doesnt seem too bad.

I'm 19, 1 year's driving and 1 year's no claims.

Fabia vRS insured for 10 months with elephant (accelerator bonus) - £1730.

No mods or convictions.

Anyone else in the same boat?

When I used to live in Manchester the local kids used to nick drainpipes and use lengths of it to launch fireworks at passing cars like RPGs. So not much different really.

What cover is that? Im 19, 2 years driving, no NCB, paying £1700 tpft

In bold tells you why. 2yrs and no NCD. Insurers will wonder where the NCD is, and why you have none

I was a named driver on another policy, which elephant have actually accepted as a years no claims :)

Also consider that Taylorrrr's insurance is a 10 month policy, rather than a 12 month (as I presume your is). If his were 12 months it would be more like £2076...

Holy cr*p... I begrudged paying £400 for fully comp on my vRS at 30 with a couple of years NCB!!

The most I've ever paid for insurance is £950 tpft on a Yamaha R1 with only 1yrs bike NCB at the time - but thats top insurance group and capable of 170mph!

  • 2 weeks later...

I added my GF to my insurance and that reduced the quote alot. Although she has been driving for longer than me so that's probably why.

I too would vote for the get a cr@p car and get the VRS when you can afford it again if you still want it.

yeah, i know, bit harsh though, i`v been driving all of those years but due to swapping cars, and due to costs at 17/18 for insurence had to swap comps a few times. I`v never had a accident though. :) Im not fussed though, i understand im a high risk at 19 in a car such as the vrs, even as a "professional driver"

matt

Being a professional driver doesnt always mean lower premiums.

Many firms see this as just as high a risk, as more likely to do something stupid.

You're both mad, or minted.

You are paying 10% the value of your car on insurance alone! Get a 1.2 clio or diesel C3 for 3 years...

Its more than that isn't it???

Kids today won't wait for anything. lol

If they can afford it and they are happy to pay then it doesn't bother me. At least they ARE actually insured.

I'm not happy paying £300 a year in insurance and would certainly not pay more than about £500 for any car i was owning. But each to their own.

I`m neither. I`m a car nut, and have been since i was a kid, i love driving even after 10 hours driving at work. i had the choice of either £1300ish insurence for a small diesel/petrol, or spend a extra £400 and have a car that i really wanted. Yes, im very lucky that i can afford to spend the extra but i wouldnt say i was mad, and if i were minted, i wouldnt be rolling in a fabia ;)

does anyone know who giving out good insurance quotes for a octavia mk1 vrs driven by a 27 yr old male with 1 yrs no claims 6000 miles a yr and 1 accident 3yr 10 months ago. i have no points on my licence and my lowest quote is £1700 which im paying this year and no matter which comparison or insurance site i go on i cant beat this. ive tried chris knott and the cheeky b******d wanted £3100 and that b*****ks flux wanted £2500. any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

That is bloody crazy for a 27 yr old!

Im the same age - had 2 years no claims on business use - no accidents but a claim for damage by pikeys.

I do 30k miles a year on business use and pay £700 - norwich union gave me an introductory discount which equates to 3 years no claims!

I also have 3 points on my licence..

I cant understand why the hell your quotes are so high!

I spoke to my insurers today to query why my renewal price was only £40 less than last year and one of the (many) reasons they gave me was that with the current economic situation, the price of parts and labour to carry out repairs has increased so they are having to pay out (in some cases 50%) more for claims now than they were a couple of years ago, so premiums aren't decreasing year on year as much as they used to :(
