Long term storage of VRS advice

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me what is the best way to leave my VRS when I go away shortly I will be leaving the car standing for 4 months plus in the past ive just disconnected battery and all has been fine when i returned on other cars but they were not my furby leaving someone else the keys is out of the question am intending to leave it under a car cover too is there any reason why this would be a bad idea for such a long period outside ?

I am not fussed about flat spots on tyres intend to get a new set on my return all about half worn at moment however if i could save them by overinflating etc any help on what exactly i should leave them at would be appreciated.

Can't see any probs with disconnecting the battery, Apart from the alarm being off. Failing that if it's being stored where it gets some daylight get a solar panel battery saver, About a tenner at Maplin.

I'd overinflate the tyres, Set them at the stated pressure for max load inside the fuel cap.

Leave it in gear with the handbrake off and the wheels chocked, To save the handbrake seizing on. Apart from that there's really not much else

Jack it up and leave it on axle stands. Covering a car and leaving it outdoors can cause problems with paint reactions. Trust me I know, I have a classic car which is stored 6 months of the year. Here is how I store my mini... ;)

Inside there are 3 fans which circulate air that are powered from a leisure battery

Covering a car and leaving it outdoors can cause problems with paint reactions.

Also, if the car is slightly dirty (or the cover scratchy), the wind will rub the cover against the car and will scratch the paintwork. You can get fleece lined covers, but if these get wet you're just as worse off.

I imagine a modern car can survive 4 months without being covered, heck most only get washed once a year. Put a thick layer of wax on it, and then follow Mike advise above.

unfortunately I cannot leave it on stands :( not where its going to be will have to leave keys with someone in case of an emergency but that's it need to find somewhere that doesn't attract the weird yellowish sap that layers on cars here after a week its like a layer of honey on the cars and is a BUGGER To clean off despite car being yellow I don't think that would be good for it lol

cheers for advice all

Not no anyone with a farm or warehouse that you could tuck it away in a corner of a big shed / barn?

I would follow MIKESM56's advise also, and although covers can scratch paint, i would just ensure the car is clean and dry before putting it on and tie it down TIGHT (Invest in plenty of bungee straps) because slight rubbing with the wind over 4 months could wear the paint right down at tight spots/corners, Try eliminate all movement in the cover, oh and definately get a quilted interior one.

It would also give me piece of mind that knowone has run a key down the side of it or anything, and dirt rain and leaves etc wont be lying on the paint either.

SORTED
