NAS drives for home

Featured Replies

That's my only other option, I mentioned it above but it's just adding more to it and if I can only get 10MB/s directly cabled to the HTPC then it's a gamble.

@ the OP... (ill clean this thread up shortly)

If your after hosting VMs, you need all the performance you can get.. something 99% of consumer NAS devices wont have the power to deliver...

Because you seem like a tech-savvy person.. how about checking out FreeNAS - even on a low spec PC itll run rings round a consumer-NAS thingy.. plus it supports NFS so you will be able to use it as a NFS datastore for ESX :)

Ooops yeah sorry for the HiJack.

Perhaps you could merge my debacle with my low speed thread Col.

My HD movie collection is on one of these with a couple of 1TB spinpoint's inside and connected to the esata.

I also use it to save the screen captures etc I do from home for MS

That would handle the performance issues but of course it's not NAS.

Will I get much better from eSATA than USB and if so has anyone seen an eSATA half height PCIe card?

I should add that I currently have a 1TB spinpoint and looking toward another soon, but I don't see the need for raid.

Back off buster! This is MY hood

I'm getting a sustained over 150MB/s on my Homeplug AV's hooked up over the domestic wiring, and it splits off the second homeplug into a 6 port gig switch feeding the 360, Panasonic Media centre, Wii. In fact the second plug is connected to the mains via an 8 gang socket. No wires that are visible and decent speed ...... win's for me.

Go for it.. its just binned me off and wont let me do it

Technically ..... esata will rip the tit's off USB, I use an adaptec card in mine but it handles the internal RAID as well as the Esata, I'm not a big fan of the onboard controllers.

here's a decent half height

What OS though Tony, it seems to me that Vista may be the issue at heart here, everywhere I read it points back to Vista. I don't have space to keep adding extra cards sadly, I have no spare slots or SATA but I suppose I could sacrifice the TV tuner for an eSATA or decent Gig card.

That Thecus box has a 1tb max so that seems they are getting 1tb across the 2x 1tb raid, I'm looking for a 2tb total.

Like the idea though.

Mines running on Vista ultimate 64bit edition on SP1 Stu, I am actually running my thecus striped and so have 2GB of storage. It may not be supported but it works on mine mate.

Hmm - Me too.

Did you do any tweaks to the OS?

I know where i can get a 48drive unit that has SASx4 connectors out the back. ;)

If I'm truthfull I really like the Synology NAS that I have, it's expensive but supposedly, I'm told, good.

As I said there is very little point in me keeping it if I cannot get the throughput to it. I've scoured the Synology forums and lots of people complain about access speeds with Vista and many hoped SP1 would fix it but to no avail.

I need to have 2tb of storage as I have about 1tb now so I want to allow for growth. I'm not worried about backup but would I be right in thinking that raid striped would give greater speed and still give me 2tb?

Tony - How do you access your files, mapped drives?

Not really mate, RDC is off and auto tuning is disabled as well as QOS and that's it.

Ok - I have RDC off, Auto Tuning is on and so is QOS.

Worth changing?

The only thing i can *possibly* think of regarding vista is a incompatibility between Vista and the NAS..

Vista and 2k8 use a new version of the CIFS protocol.. which is what windows shares are based on.. i know there are incompatibility issues between my slug (nslu2) but because its hacked to death its not an issue for me... but from what ive seen, synology hardware seems quite similar so may be running the same software.

by the lack of a reply to all the threads on their part i would say they were trying to ignore it!

Was a feeling I got too.

I remember seeing something about this CIFS stuff in the menu - could that be something? Although it possibly only related to recycle bin.

Actually, over direct cable I may be dissing the Synology out of turn.

My bad -

I'm getting between 10.4MB/Sec and 12MB/Sec indicated which using this place for conversion -

Data transfer rate conversion online.

looks to me to be between 87mbps and 100mbps - which oddly enough is I suppose what you'd expect.

I'm 99.9% the HTPC is gigabit (must check) so Ian has suggested, as Tony does above, take them out of auto.

Tony - How do you access your files, mapped drives?

Raid stripped will give you access to 2TiB of disc space if you stripe two 1TiB drives.

However a word or warning that using RAID 0 (Striping) will more than double your risk of data loss as any error on either drive will wipe out all of your data in both drives.

If you were to go the USB drive box route, then since it is being moved around a lot there is a high risk of data loss.

Ok well SAMBA is the same as CIFS, eg windows share.

So we need to find you a good easy to configure NFS client for windows and then we can try and talk to your box via NFS and see if that helps things along.

Just looked that box is obviously running Linux as it uses ext3 as it's file system.

Actually just found the source too:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsgpl/

I might have a look see how they have done things in the config files as this could be potentially causing some speed issues depending on how it's been configured etc.

Stu, can you confirm you are running F/W version DSM 2.0-0731
