Pipercross ones are not oiled

Pipercross ones are not oiled

Ok, fair enough. They must be using a different system to a few years back then. The induction kit I used on the Fiesta was Pipercross and that was definately oiled. It was a black sponge cone.

Just out of interest, have you got a link for this particular Pipercross? I'm interested to see how they work, if they aren't oiled...

They work on the different levels of filtration

9 different levels , so the finer particals are cought further in

Larger ones on the outside , so a little bit of a shake etc.... gets rid of them

The very first line of that link says "washable air filter**". The "**" bit down the bottom says "lifetime warranty when cleaned with genuine Pipercross service kits".

A further dig on their site for service kits shows the cleaning instructions:

Pipercross Cleaning Instructions

The cleaning of a Pipercross air filter should be carried out as below. Failure to do this could result in damage to the air filter or even the vehicle.

  1. Remove excess dirt by gently brushing the filter.
  2. Apply cleaning additive (C9003 or C9000) liberally. Massage in with soft brush. Allow to soak for around 5 minutes.
  3. Flush the filter out with warm water from the clean side of the foam to the dirty side.
  4. Allow the filter to dry naturally (do not apply any heat to the filter!!)
  5. Lightly apply dirt retention additive (C9007 or C9001) on the dirty (black) side of the foam.

Steps 2-4 may need to be repeated until the filter is clean. Do not over oil the foam as this will cause a lack of performance.

The "dirt retention additive" is... you've guessed it; OIL :)

I use K&N panel filters in all my cars and there is no difference in power or economy in any. However, i am a great beleiver in changing all filters at most every 10000 miles so i am saving money in the long run by not having to change the air filter. Cleaning and oiling is a doddle

But the VAG ones are dry filters

All but VAG are oiled

I checked the following panel filters on the Pipercross website:

Pipercross Skoda Octavia Mk 2 2.0 TDI (140bhp) Panel Filter

Pipercross Skoda Octavia Mk 2 1.8 FSI Turbo Panel Filter

Both of them have the cleaning instructions listed above (i.e. they need [re]oiling). I'll assume for a moment you know something I don't, but can you supply some evidence to show that the VAG ones aren't oiled, because this goes against everything I've ever read re: replacement panel filters if true?!

We have shed loads on the shelf and all the VAG ones are listed as dry filters

I have had 2 on my car and have sold loads

All of which are dry filters

Definately definately dry filter

Ok, that sounds pretty convincing! Pipercross must use a generic link for "filter servicing", bit naughty but it's not the first time I've seen a website get a little lazy

One last question though; are you sure they aren't supplying them dry and expecting the user to oil them before use?

Hope you don't mind me quizzing you, from where I'm sitting it sounded fairly likely that you might be getting you're wires crossed ;)

I wonder:

a) how they manage to avoid using oil on VAG filters but not others?

B) what benefits the filters have over standard paper filters, because the oiling was what gave the likes of Pipercross/K&N their performance advantage?

I'm rather curious about this now, but their website has nothing to say about "dry filters" :thumbdwn:

The dry filters have coma about , as there are quite a few people that think it is the oil on the filters that damage the maf

But then , it is down to the oil breathers that cause this issue

But pipercross did some research and found that they could do the filter dry without any oil

If the customer prefered then there was some oil spray put in the box

it is trying to please everyone , to which I have found you cannot do

The Pipercross filter comes with 9 different levels of filtration , like I have said

What happens is then , the finer particles , just filter out until they are cought right at the end

I have had 2 on my car now

it is removed and checked and cleaned and so far , I have not had any issues with anything getting though with the second one

i did have a little bit on the first one

But this is the one that they found they was slightly too small on the corners and was resolved straight away

They too my air box off to do the testing  on it and within a couple of weeks , it was all sorted

As I say , I have seen an increase in fuel economy , a tad bit of sound and a bit better throttle response

I dont know if it is me , but i do the same journey (148 miles) every day to and from work and tend to pick up on the slightest little bit of anything different on the car

I have done over 100k in my little furby so i know her inside out

Thanks, that's interesting stuff!

It's funny you mention the MAF sensor, a few people on the MX-5 OC forum used to report issues with this.

I'm still curious as to why it's only the VAG ones that are dry, is it merely market pressure, or are VAG just the first, or is it a technical reason to do with VAG engines?

That's quite a commute by the way

Will be ordering a pipercross myself soon - will wait until Bluefins out and do both at same time.

Yes , Pipercross was listening to all the computer people that said it was K&N that damamge the MAF

But then , we know it is not that at all that damage the MAF...but hey

So yes peir pressure that made them do it like that.......

Yes a comute , you should have seen the 3ft snow drifts that I was going through today
