Front disks and pads - pricey?

Featured Replies

Ahoy,

I'm the proud owner of a blue Fabia 1.2. On the last service/MOT she was flagged as needing front disks and pads replacing, so I'm looking into having them done. Kwik Fit have already quoted me, and are doing their lifetime replacement offer, but I used to work with a Kwik Fit fitter whose garage was less than honourable, so I'm going to avoid them if possible. Something that sounds too good to be true usually is....

What should I be paying for the front disks and pads, including labour? Kwik wanted £229 all in for it, is that any good?

Thanks for the help in advance, chaps

I'd also ask the local dealers, or check out one of the sponsors here if you are local to them :)

Roger, roger. I'd love to know even if its in the right ballpark, there must be someone who has had the same job done in the last six months?

That's probably not cheaper than a dealer for standard kit IMO - I think the front half of the uprated discs and pads I now have on mine cost about what Kwik Fit are quoting you, and the place that put mine on aren't cheap!

If you're just going for a straight swap, I'd look and see that the nearest independent garage to you can do...

Ok, thanks for the insight chap.

I would say that around £70 for 2x front disks and 1x set front pads. 1x hour labour to fit +VAT

Skoda Fabia Brake Discs - Skoda Fabia Brake Pads

I don't think Kwikfeck can charge £135/hour labour? That would be more than a Main dealer!!!

£140 fully fitted from an independant would be a fair price.

I paid about £150 fitted for 280mm vented plus pads on an Octy.

i think kwik fit are taking the p**s with £229!!!!. i have just changed my front & rear disc,s & pads for £90 all inc, i did fit them myself though. car is a 04 octy vrs. you could buy the parts from a motor factor for less than £ 50. hour tops to fit.:)

Thanks to you all I've avoided KwikFit, and just got back from my local Skoda dealership who had parts in stock, had a slot open 45 minutes after my phone call and were all done in an hour for £165.

Thanks again chaps.

One thing to remember is the quality of Brake pads. It is yours safety we are talking about. Always insist on Mintex or Ferrodo. Although ATM we are using EBC which are still good and trusted.

My dad once put a set of cheep pads from a local motor factors before an MOT on his old MG Maestro. Once bed in, he slowed for 5 corners then wondered why the brakes were poor. When stationary, two plumes of smoke came from the brakes! He decided never again to put cheep pads on his cars.

You can normally buy Ferrodo from Halfords and EBC from EBCDirect, see advert in this post.

£229!

What a rip off.

Get some Mintex OE equivalant pads from ebay or a motor factors, then a local independent to fit.

As said should be more like £150.

motor factors such as andrew pages & york motor factors dont sell dubious cheap brake parts, they may not be as good as some performance parts but are a good quality product at a good price,my £90 all inc was for lockead parts which is original equipment on a lot of manufacturers.there are some people who sell cheap parts which dont last 5 mins.im a mechanic of 18 years & never take a chance with brakes. glad your sorted, kwik fit should stick to what their good at, inflating tyres!

I paid £160 just before christmas at the local dealer.

Remember its £229 for life - ie for as long as you have that car - I'd still avoid them, its about as handy as the Kwik-Fit batteries with good warranties, they are all the same cheap bateries but you get a good warranty if you pay more - pity that you need to get the car back to Kwik-Fit to make use of the warranty though, that might not be easy with a dead battery! Like others, I always try to put my money into buying proper quality parts as then you tend not to need to use the parts manufacturer's warranty - instead of buying crap with good warranty for the same money - and having a good chance of having trouble!

My only concern with Mintex is that they were not OEM parts suppliers to VAG - but their EU arm - ie TMD-Friction are - with Pagid and Textar - and they can supply exactly the same parts as were fitted in the factory - you can get them from GSF and/or ECP.

Thing is that the 'for life' will exclude normal wear and tear. So IMHO it is a waste of time ;)

Glad I'm on 312mm at the front though, they last much longer, even when 'used' a fair bit on the road.

Just had front discs and pads and a front wheel bearing replaced on My Octavia Slx tdi 1999 at my local independant total was £230. So I would say Kwik Fit was dear at the price you were quoted.
