Another PD140 Turbo replaced!

Featured Replies

£2000 of work :(:(:(

Thankfully done under warranty :D

Been having the dreaded police siren in the distance sound for a couple of months now, so when I got the letter from Bickerton Skoda about my free end of warranty check and discounted MOT, thought I would mention the noise.

The car passed the MOT without bother, but I wasnt sure they would be able to help me with the turbo as it was still working.

However, to my surprise they said book it in for a new one fitting

I was going to take out another years warranty, in case the turbo did give up the ghost before I managed the big turbo upgrade, but now Im not sure I need too.

What a difference, the car is so much quieter now, I guess I had got so used to the siren noise.

Anyway, just wanted to say a big thanks to Bickertons service dept. as I have not always had good things to say about them in the past :o

Cheers

Damian

btw they had 2 Ltd Edition Octavia VRS's in...

I really love the interior, seats are stunning, steering wheel excellent, Bolero stereo looks lush. Exterior not too bothered. Colours bland (although might be nicer polished up, as these were dirty!), dont like the alloys (zeniths are better IMO) no xenons, and the gap between wheel and arch looked huge on the 2 they had in, but I guess im used to my coilies :D

Nice result

How many miles had yours done?

Steve

Excellent result indeed!

Cheers Tom, it certainly was :)

Damo, just wondering have you done much research into a turbo upgrade yet? Im on the same boat as yourself and Im finding it hard to get much info about it all.

what I have collected so far:

Remove turbo and send to Turbo Dynamics

Recieve back, fit and remap car.

good to go for 200-240 hp

now I would think I will have to be adding a new clutch in there too, but apparently Intercooler etc are ok standard?

If I went for a turbo upgrade, I'd be more interested in upgraded reliability than power, is there anyone out there catering for this?!

Hi

Not done too much research yet, as I dont have the funds now, but I have had a quote in the region of £2-2300 for hybrid turbo, uprated clutch and stage 2 remap at JBS.

Eddy H had this done on his Audi A3 and he now has 212bhp and 150mph+

Thats without a performance exhaust or filter.

He says its frighteningly fast, and he used to have a mk1 Octy Estate running 400bhp

Also the Derv Doctor do turbo swaps for around £600 exchange IIRC

Let me know if you find anything as well

Cheers

Damian

Excellent result and glad all is well again:thumbup:

My car has been making the siren sound since I got it at 14K miles at less than 1 year old, I put it down to a characteristic of the engine. Now well over 3 years old and with 68K on the clock the sound is still exactly the same and the turbos working perfectly well.

I hope it doesnt break now, 2K is a lot cash when you have no warranty.

well to be honest I cant say for sure, but Ive heard that a Hybrid will be stronger and more reliable, thats why you can take advantage and map your car for more power!

Bickerton Skoda quoted me £1100+VAT for a Turbo for a 1.9TDI.

My local garage supplied a brand new turbo and fitted the turbo for under £1k.

I know mate.

I read, re-read and read again all the past posts regarding the siren sound, and as you know, some seem fine for miles and miles and some go pop

It really was worrying, so to get one fitted under warranty was a load off my mind

Maybe its just the luck of the draw, but you would have thought Skoda would have identified the problem and rectified an obvious weak point

Im sure this new one will get the same sound at some stage, but hopefully I will be in a position to get a hybrid one then.

Cheers

Thats main dealers for you...££££££

Mine has been making that police siren noise since about 55k. It's now done over 77k but doesn't seem to have change although I suspest the VNT vanes are sticking every now and again.

I have been to three different dealers and they say there is nothing wrong with it.

If you're running Garrett units across the board on the Octy2 in PD140 spec, then Turbo Dynamics will be able to quote you for a re-build and upgrade on the existing unit. The internals are very similar to those turbos used in PD130/150 application, so cost should be around £500 for this to be done.

Re removal and re-fit costs, you'd be looking at around 5hrs total labour. Plus re-fit parts will come to around £100 (oil feed pipes, gaskets, bolts etc) Then mapping on top of that. An uprated clutch would be a very good idea! Don't know enough about intercooling on the Octy2, sorry, but I'd be surprised if the standard arrangement has enough growth in it to take this sort of application. I'd cost in an FMIC personally. Not sure if Forge currently offer one of the Octy 2 diesels, but perhaps £600 for budgeting purposes?

HTH,

Steve

More info

My VNT Turbo on my 1.9TDI use to start speeding up once it had been idling about 30 seconds. Use to sound like a police car coming whilst doing short shifts.

Then the shaft snapped whilst on boost...ripping it to pieces lol.

Mine whines up on idle after about 45-60 seconds when warmed up................................ A short blip on the throttle shuts it up but only for about 45 seconds.

Bets are being taken now: 80k, 85k, 90k+?

Yea, thats what my 1.9TDI use to do...until it snapped on full boost hahaha! Died at 125k on mine.

My mechanic found the remainder of the turbine wheel lodged in the front of the Catalytic Convertor too.

Either way it could end up looking like this

Thats some good news Damian. I've never had a problem with Bickerton, I shall be in there for my discounted MOT next week.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bit of an old thread now but.................

My turbo popped good an' proper today

Pulled out onto the road, accelerated away and 'BANG' - no power from the engine, odd grinding noise and the biggest cloud of smoke i've ever seen at the back of a car, a good splattering of oil at the back of the engine too.

Limped back to the site I was working at and called Skoda Assist, chappie from VW assistance arrived within 2 hours and initially diagnosed a popped boost hose - great I thought.

He re appeared half an hour later to inform me the bit of the turbo the hose connects to is no longer there

In a nutshell, the compressor housing (volute casing maybe) has split in two and obviously needs to be replaced.

Could have been worse, It could have popped on the M23/M25/M26/M20 whilst driving to site. Most of my journey was m-way today.

My car is now (hopefully) at Caffyns Ashford awaiting a new turbo. I am currently rolling in a Zafira Design CDTI - don't like it very much :thumbdwn:

10/10 for Skoda assist though.

Its worth noting the turbo 'police siren' noise got noticeably louder and harsher over the last few weeks and there were a few occasions where the turbo appeared to shut down leading to an almost total loss of engine power, a restart cured it though.

that sound real nasty. have you still got any warranty left on it?

Im sure this new one will get the same sound at some stage, but hopefully I will be in a position to get a hybrid one then.

Cheers

Damian
