05 Fabia vrs remapped without knowing

Featured Replies

Hi, i bought my 05 fabia vrs 6 months ago from a dealer, it was the car i test drove and the only one i've ever driven. i knew they were quick, but it really suprised me how well this one went.my mate recently bought a cheap chip for his mk5 golf GT TDI,so tried it and he couldnt keep up with my vrs. i then started to notice that other similar cars, like bmw, audi, vw even gt golfs couldn't really pull away from me! so i decided to put it on a dyno, to find out that its 187 bhp & 437nm torque.....:D now obviously i'm not complaining, but this is from a dealer so i thought they should have known this?? do they have to declare?? but suddenly i've noticed a very funky noise from the car when i ring its neck. its not at the redline. more 2000 - 3800 rpm it cant be the turbo because theres no noise in neutral, and its intermittent!!! used warranty runs out in 6 months. what should i do? its due an mot in 2 weeks so i could bring it up when i take it in. sods law it go bang after the warranty runs out!!!!!!!!

Get it in and say nothing ;)

Ignorance is bliss as they say

For one thing I would guess your insurance is invalid as its no longer a standard car.

Not an expert but with a standard clutch I would expect that to go soon and possible the DMF depending upon how you drive. Someone better at this thanme will be along soon I would expect.

driving style will defo contribute to blowing a clutch apart lol ;) I'd get the car totally checked out before the MOT and warranty ends

If it's on the stock clutch, the funky noise is probably the dual mass flywheel moaning a bit! I would either:

a) take it back to the dealer and ask them to flash it back to standard (if they can?) - i.e moan that it was chipped without your prior consent / knowledge

B) get an uprated clutch, add the "ecu flash / tuneup" clause to your insurers/pay any extra, and just enjoy the car. 187 horses is a fair amount from just a remap though so I would be curious to know what else has been done too.

My Octavia was mapped too, I didn't know until I tried to remap it. Wasn't impressed but I didn't see a point in complaining.

thanks lads, i like it as it is, if they reflash it back to standard i'd probably get bored of the car. but obviously i dont want to fork out when something goes wrong. can i not get skoda to upgrade it. i know they only have stock parts, but still its not my fault they sold me the car in the first place!!!

bought mines from a dealer standard...

turned out to have a switchable star map, no dongle though

what bhp is yours up2?

what bhp is yours up2?

r/r'd at 173.5 bhp and 347lb-ft torque... but rolling roads arent gospel but its obviously mapped...

I also know the car as it was up for sale on ebay and i had my eye on it before it got traded in at the dealers

i need to find out where it was done. you had any trouble with clutch ?

Yip went kaboom after around 5k miles of me having it...

So i went overboard and spent £830 on a Helix clutch and SMF. 30k on and its going good

you had any trouble with clutch ?

and you're running 15bhp more. ;) [hint hint]

There are lots of options for the clutch, none of them cheap sadly. I ended up importing a rather special bit of kit from the US when it was $2:£1 and it ended up saving me quite a bit (£230 saving on the helix kit mentioned above and a much higher torque rating)

Spoil sport

:P I would sooner enlighten the newbie on the potential costs well before anything actually breaks and he's up the nasty brown creek without a paddle. :D

I am so glad I got my clutch when I did though. A totally bullet-proof clutch, which will outlast everything it is connected to I reckon. Sure, it's a bit harsh, but I can live with that if it's solid from day 1 to day 10,000.

****.. see i dont know when or where it was done. the guy who had the car before me works at the dealers. i need to talk to him. it had 17500 when i got it, now done 19700 so its holding on. and it only started to day on and off. would a new stock clutch see me out for another 20k (warranty of course). could it be something else? drives fine & goes likes a train.

I would be tempted, in the short term, to get it flashed back to stock (most stock ones still dyno 140hp so it won't be too bad) and check out future tuning yourself as and when you can get around to it / afford it. It's not a cheap thing to get involved in but at least you have the bonus of a £400 odd remap on the car. Now a strong clutch is needed to cope with that, and your insurance company informed.

For one thing I would guess your insurance is invalid as its no longer a standard car.

If the car has been purchased without the dealer informing the buyer that it has been mapped then it's not invalid. As far as the dude is aware it's standard.

But not any more, because the dude in question is posting on here telling us all that his car is mapped

Plead ignorance if you want, but I wouldn't want to stand up in court against an insurance company, because let's face it, I'd lose

i suspect mine is chipped too.

had it for what.. 2 months now and the only way I can tell is by fuel economy, if that is relevant. I've never got above the mid 40's since i got it. I don't thrash the car, but I don't hang around either.

Car has 312mm breaks, first clue may be.

Dealer sold it to me as standard.. Full 12 month warranty.

Ignorance is bliss or stoopid!

Ignorance is also no defence.

so you're saying franchised dealers shouldn't be trusted?

I think Tom means that they should know what they are selling, if it's gone through a multipoint check prior to sale for example, how would they miss the disks / calipers?

My comment was really aimed towards the owner of the vehicle. If in the extreme circumstance the insurance company decided not to pay out on grounds of undeclared modifications, claiming you didn't know the vehicle was modified won't wash, and you will then have a claim with the vendor.

Get it put back to standard or declare the mods. If you want to take it up with the vendor do it sooner rather than later.

I would think the vendor won't have realised its not stock, but should either return it to stock or advertise it with the mods if they are aware of them.

Considering this is the first one the guy has drove. You mean to say that if he had not had it dyno'd and he had to claim, he would have no arguement when the insurance company dont pay out for his, as far as he was concerned, standard car?
