Taxi meter

Featured Replies

Although i read this board quite often this is my first thread.I have a superb 1.9d 55 plate at the moment the taxi meter is connected to the speedo wire and works fine.I will be taking delivery of a new 1.9s this month and wanted to know if my taxi meter would connect the same way.Or would i need a can bus sensor thingy. Can any taxi drivers help. Thanks in advance.

Stuart.

It should be full canbus iirc, which in turn means unless your meter is an old one there shouldn't be any need for an add on box, and it's a simple hook up to the speed pulse on the rear of the radio loom.

I'm not a taxi driver, but the one I spoke to who complained about the seats being uncomfortable (compared to the Octavia) also said there was nowhere to fix the meter. He'd had a Mk2 for 3/4 months (ordered without looking at one) and said he had no option but to leave the meter lying in the passenger seat footwell - no idea if that's correct but presumably if there was a slot to use or obvious place to put it he would have done so.

At least here in Finland, those who use the taximeter called SEMEL, don`t need any additional devices hanging around. In Audi I had an additional device that could get the speed pulse from the car.

i have read somewhere that the taxi meter should be positioned in such a way that it is clearly visible to the passengers(clients) all the time...

scary thing to do in England...he could get a huge fine if get caught, i suppose...

absolutely correct, it has to be visible to all passengers. my dad has fitted to his mk2 above the centre air vents looks very neat, will try and get a pic up sometime.

I hope to remove the 2 din radio and replace it with my single din DAB and place the meter underneath, the same way as i have it in my present Superb MK 1.I don't know how easy it would be to change the aerial to my DAB bee sting type, but i'll be trying that as well. Thanks for your help any more would be appreciated.

I have a Digitax meter in my Superb and does not need any additional devices, the meter is located above the rear view mirror on the windscreen.

About to put a sheriff ultima in mine so will see I guess.

^^^^^^^ Like that looks very neat.

Very nice. Well my car isn't turning up today!:rotz: I'm told it will be with me 1st thing monday. I'm hoping my old sheriff meter won't need anything for speed signal. Want to get back on the road asap!

I am suprised that Taxi meters still rely on things like speed pulse and not switched to being GPS based,

There are very few that work of GPS, the thing about GPS is they are not as reliable as pulse. If you drive into a city centre with high buildings the system can loose the signal and if you loose the signal then your meter isn't going to run, i wouldn't want one in my car for that reason. The only plus point is there is no wiring.

Our lads site the meter in the on top dash storage box in an Octy.

I think you are going to need an add on there Ben, old Sheriff's still drive off the speedo cable iirc.

We normally take them off the speed pulse on the back of the radio but will have to see with this one. Wiring diagram does show a speed pulse on back of dash unit but we will see if that works!

Will post some pics of the car on monday.

Not much use in a Superb though.

I read Chris' post wrong, I thought someone had had trouble locating a place in an Octy, as for the Superb you just need a bracket to slide under the vents as already said, or you can get a screen mount for a meter now as well like a sat nav one.

I have put my meter in the box above the mirror. The meter can be covered up by replacing the cover when not needed.

I like that! Fitting mine tonight and will be looking to see if mine will fit there. What was it like to get the wiring there?

Having spoken to someone who fits meters for a living, he thinks we shouldn't need a magic box. Should be able to take signal from pin 9 on the back of the dash cluster he thinks! We will find out tonight! Hope so, taxi test in the morning and the only local place I can get a little black box are complete gits, and won't sell you one unless you pay them to fit it and there work is shocking!

The meter was fitted by myself no magic boxes etc was needed. The pulse part was fitted by a meter fitter,he said it was connected to the back of the dash so quite possibly pin 9
