Maxidot retrofit - Problems - Help me Briskoda!

To get this issue sorted out I'd happily drive to the ends of the world

*Please Note - The above line maybe a slight exaggeration and driving to the literal end of the world may not actually be an option I would consider.

I was going to approach the forums tech genius nay god on the South coast (as I've been down to see him before to get CC fitted).

I just always feel guilty asking someone to spare some valuable weekend time to help me out :)

If you were thinking of asking me then I'm afraid you don't have until the weekend!!

Ah ha - that rules that one out then :)

Are you off anywhere nice for a long time then?

Hopefully the AutoHaus techy will get back into the thread before you go :)

ill have to dig out the paper work on the job to see if we have the fault code for the car

when testing the fault i know off was function test activated , when tetsting via gff the car was asking for an esp road test to turn the said light off i only have vas 5051 at work to carry out the settings i spent a good 2 hrs trying to turn the light off carrying out an esp road test but unable to how ever have looked in to trying to do the same way you would do if it was an octavia a4 4wd but still wouldnt work

as for the abs light being on at mot times this is a test fail so will need to sort something out

if anyone has ideas im contactable thru the dealership or on here and ill look into the paper work for fault codes

Well I'm willing to do it for you but you gotta get here.

Stoofa

When does your car need an MOT?

If you cant get it sorted in a couple of weeks i will be back in the UK and have VCDS. If Stu can send me the step by step proceedure then i will be quite happy to do it for you. Im in Folkestone but often drive up north so could meet you or if you fancy a day trip to the coast ill do it then.

Hi Gav611, mine was the first Maxidot that you fitted, in response to an earlier question it is a TDI. If you want to try sorting out the abs problem using VCDS you can borrow my lead for a few days, Perhaps Stu will give you step by step instructions if required. PM me if you're interested.

Stoofa, I'm just north of Nottingham and I'm off work at the moment. Do you want to have a wander up here? Between me and Stu I'm sure we can get it sorted. I fitted mine myself although I had some problems they weren't related to my VCDS programming skills

My cars first MOT isn't due until December - so I've certainly got some time.

My main worry at the moment is that ABS isn't currently functioning.

Yes we lived without ABS for many years and it is a "get out of jail" rather than a prevention - but I do like it being there :)

According to the AA website Chatteris to Mansfield is around 100 miles which I am more than happy to travel to solve this little one.

I can probably get a day off work, however would a Saturday be convenient at all?

I'm at work at the moment - if you don't get chance to answer this post I'll drop you a text and we can sort something out, which would be great.

What would be great is if we could also note down the process (if we are able to fix it) and we can let the guys over at Autohaus know the procedure for future reference.

They have been great through all this so I'd like to give them the info for if they take on any more of these upgrades :)

No problem, I think I misread things somewhere and thought it was really urgent! I'm free this weekend, let me know if you'd like to come up.

  • 5 weeks later...

Stoofa, any update on this?

I'd put the Maxidot retrofit idea on hold as I'd put my spare key in a safe place but then couldn't find it :o - until a serious search last weekend.

As a TFSI owner, it would be good to know if you've managed to sort your problem before I make a decision on ordering one.

Mine's a TFSi and no problems with mine. Not sure how Stoofa's getting on with his problems but many a Maxidot has been retrofitted without issue

Oh sorry about that - I did mean to update this thread.

OK, as you know I was stuck with the ABS light on.

One of the great guys on this forum said he'd take a look - he did, however after numerous hours I think we both lost the will to live on the issue.

On the drive home I added ESP and Tyre Pressure warning to my illuminations - all three lights were on constantly.

So basically I booked the car back into Autohaus to have the old dashpod fitted - I wasn't convinced that would solve the problem, however if it didn't then it was Autohaus' problem to fix and not mine.

I spoke to my local dealer (Vindis) and explained the problem and they said they would take a look.

After a days work they too were running out of ideas, nothing obvious was wrong.

They contacted Skoda UK who esculated it back to the factory.

Vindis were doing live data capture and sending accross the pond, then getting suggestions on how to proceed with fixing.

Eventually after a day and a half the problem was found and it was.....something had not been coded correctly by Autohaus!!

Vindis had worked on my car for 8hrs to get this issue fixed and it looks like it was an error by Autohaus.

I didn't pay for 8hrs labour at Vindis but lets say I did have to pay a lot more than I ever planned on paying for this upgrade.

I've now had the MaxiDot correctly installed for about two weeks and none of the lights have returned, so I'm going to class this as job complete and I'm happy to have Maxidot.

However because of my experience and even though the staff at Autohaus were excellent, I can't recommend going there for the fitting due to what has happened with me.

No apology necessary Stoofa.

Good to hear that you got it sorted in the end.

The question is do I want Maxidot enough to risk going through what you've been through? But on the other hand its reassuring to know that it was the dealer's error and not some fundamental compatibility issue.

Thanks again for bringing us up to date.

I really can't stress this enough Mercurio - there is NO issue with retrofitting Maxidot!! Just clueless dealers that can't do any more than what their VAS machine can tell them and by the looks of it certain dealers can't even manage that!!

Do you know what the coding error was Stoofa?

Do you know what the coding error was Stoofa?

That I would also like to know because basically there's nothing you can code wrong that causes this kind of behaviour. All the cluster coding is done to adaptation values which affect the longlife service interval and mileage display.

I'm pretty sure that the problem was that they chose the wrong ABS/ESP module when trying to do the basic settings. I think that's a very common error when using VAS for the first time to this job.

When my maxidot was installed, it was done on the VAS machine using the guided function for swapping a dashpod under warranty. The process is a bit like copying a CD, the source data is read and stored on the VAS machine, then the cluster is swapped and the data written back to the new cluster.

All mine needed, and even that is part of the process is the keys coding and the steering angle sensor recalibrating. Nothing else needed coding.

Mine has been installed for nearly 2 years (thanks to VRStu) and is still working perfectly to this day.

Well that is just it - it should have literally been one unit out and one unit in, but from the very beginning, when the ABS light came on and wouldn't go out we knew something was amiss.

I'll get back in touch with my local dealership and ask them to give me the "full technical" breakdown of what they did.

I know dealerships can lie, but they were working on my car for literally hours and getting nowhere.

In fact they were almost ready to give up too.

Then as I was chatting on the phone they got a call from the factory.

I was put on hold for 10 minutes, when they got back to me they said "OK, job now down, come and collect it".

I'll see what I can find out.

And as said - there is no compatability issue with Maxidot and the older Octy2's.

Just a little incompatability between Maxidot and some dealerships :)

Maxidot is the name for the dashboard which has the full height information display in the dashboard. The screen displays white numbers/images (such as which car door is open and trip computer information etc) but the big advantages are that it can show sat nav directions with used with OE sat nav and displays information from the retrofit Bluetooth phone kit and aftermarket iPod links.
