Fitting New Springs to rear

Featured Replies

Right ive got all the tools now needed to upgrade the suspension myself now, and looked through how to guides loads i just unsure about the springs at the rear how i change them over? as only can find guide to do the front ones? thanks in advance

Car on axle stands, fit spring compressor, compress spring and remove. Wear eye protection and thick gloves.

Alternatively, drop the back suspension arms as much as possible (by removing the bottom bolt on the suspension strut) and the springs will fall out so there is no need for compressors

ohh okay sooo basically its just removing the spring and theres not bolts and that to remove. when i remove the springs will anything drop at all or raise? or will they just drop out?

sorry for the newbie questions lol just want to know what to exactly expect and be ready:D

Jack up the back of the car on the towing eye, as high as you can then stick in your axle stands (better to be safe than flat) making sure the rear wheels are off the ground, remove the bottom bolts from both rear shockers and the whole axle will drop to the ground, thus allowing the springs to just pull out, plop the new springs in and lift the axle back up to align the shocker with the bolt holes, stick a bolt in to hold it in place and tighten them up, making sure the springs sit nicly in the cups, then remove your axle stands and let the jack down. Best to re-check the spring are sitting correctly in the cups when the car's down and the weight is on them. Hey presto - lowerage!

Like what i said but with pics :)

just to clarify can i put the axle stands underneathe the spring cups and then undo the bolt from the shocker and then remove the spring? will that work and be safe? also do i remove the rear wheels before doing all this?

someone must know?? lol

No, you need the spring cups to drop to uncompress the spring so you can get it out.

Just get the car high enough on a trolley jack have an axle stand in place for safety, but not under the cup. I have managed to get them out without taking bolts out, but worst case take the bottom bolt out and drop the angle of the axle a bit mor and give the spring a tug :D

i only have one trolley jack so that wouldnt work would it? do u mean the bolt to the shock absorber? or something else?

Sorry, Yes if you struggle to get the leverage then you could try taking the bottom bolt out the shockie, but I have never really needed to do it, I have also done it with one trolley jack and did a side at a time, not Ideal as its far easier when both wheels are up in the air.

I have had a rake about the net and found this Seat Ibiza Mk4 Rear Shock Absorber Replacement it is changing the shockie but you get the idea, in pic 2 ignore the trolly jack, but you can see the axle stand behind it.

That is an Ibiza so pretty similar.

oh okay thanks alot, that really helps. last thing should i take the wheels off or leave on?

If you can get the car high enough with the wheels on then just leave them on, if when you are pushing down on the axle to get the spring out and the wheels hit the ground you will need them off.

I guess if you have the axle stands up full you will be fine to leave them on.

ohhh okay where has he put the axle stands in that guide btw?

leave the wheels on.

Jack the car up with a trolley jack and a suitable piece of hard wood underneath the spring cup. when the wheels are off the ground place an axle stand under the sill - there is a reinforced part marked with an arrow.

repeat on the other side.

MAKE SURE THE WHEELS ARE OFF THE GROUND A GOOD FEW INCHES.

remove trollley jack from under spring cup and place under bottom of shock mount to take some weight, undo the bolt and gently lower the trolley jack, the axle should drop and the springs will pull out with a little bit of force, but not too much.

make sure you replace the rubber at the top on the new spring, then refit.

righttt well i got it on the stands and everything fine and got the hang of it.

started with the front first took the wheel off and first bolt from the top drop link i snapped the torx bit. i managed to undo the bolt but seems like i need to undo the torx bit too to get it off?

soo now i have to go up to skoda and order new bolts lol what part number is that bolt?

the drop link?

you inset a t30 bit into it and use it as a counter-turn whilst you undo the nut (17mm I think)

if you are having trouble I'd just do the rears to save money and get a pro to do the fronts as they looked like hard work when the guy did mine!

rightt ive had a bit of a disaster lol i couldnt seem to get the suspension out at all so i then decided just leave it and put it back to normal for now and either forget bout lowering or get a professional.

and i cant even do that now! lol i cant seem to get it to like up with the 3 top mounting strut bolts and also where the hub spreaded open with the vw tool i cant get it to slide back up to orginal postition and i vw tool back in and tried to open the hub to slide back up its snapped! leaving it in between the hub still. and ive called it a day and got a mechanic coming round monday afternoon to come fix it all.

do you think they will be able to do it without that vw tool still??
