Virgin ADSL 2+ Upgrade Problems

Featured Replies

Ok, i'm not the most techie person on here, so I'mm going to ask your opnions!

I'm on Virgin BB 8MB using my own Netgear DG834N v1. running fine with no problems for ages. I was notified by Virgn that I was being upgraded "free" of charge & that after the upgrade i'd need to re-start my router. So the other day I get an email telling me that the upgrade has been applied, but within an hour of this email, SWMBO was on the phone saying she had no internet. So I told her to re-start the router, which she did, and still no internet, but all the lights were suggesting the router was logged on!

Anyway, cutting a long story short the "internet" light on the router can sometimes be on when the "DSL" light is off & even when all lights are on, there is stil no abilty to connect to the internet. So i've been plugged into the test socket for 12 days and still nothing. Virgin say they are still investigating, they did hint at there being a tempory fault at our exchange, or it was my router as it "may not be ADSL 2+ compatable".

So i've checked with Netgear, who say it's deffinatly ADSL2+ compatable & running the latest firmware.

I've no idea how long it wil take to get my internet back, but could it be my problem, could it be the router? Is there any way of testing anything from my side? I've no access to another router unless I buy a new one, and I really don't want to do this unless it's absolutly needed!

Anyway, just as well i can connect (slowly!) via my iPhone!!!

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Faulty filter?

Can you log onto the router and look at the sync and connection status and post it up please?

Does the router fully support ADSL 2+.

Faulty filter?

Could be... I did swap them all round, which didn't make any difference, but I guess I could justify buying another one just to be sure

Is this the info you need?

Good point!!!

According to Netgear Customer Support "Yes", but then they would say that, wouldn't they... However they can't say if it is suitable for any particular ISP!

To add to the information, the DSL light was on most of yesterday evening, but nothing would connect to the internet via the router, and this morning it's off again??????

I thought ADSL was for BT sourced connections, for Virgin you need a cable router.

Virgin offer both Cable or ADSL depending on location, they purchased an ADSL ISP and rebranded it under the virgin name.

Well you appear to have DSL sync but you are not actually connected to the internet. You are synced at ADSL2+ speeds so at this point it looks like your router is compatible at first glance.

It may be that your encapsulation settings and VPI/VCI settings need to be changed. Usually ADSL uses VC-MUX encapsulation and VPI 0 and VCI 38. I'm not sure if these may have changed now that you're on the new ADSL2 service but it is worth asking Virgin the question. I'm with Be Broadband and it uses different encapsulation and a different VCI.

I go with new encapsulation needed or a filter letting too much noise.

AKAIU ADSL2+ is far less tolerant of a faulty filter than standard ADSL.

Cheers guys, I wondered about the encapsulation, had tried seveeral settings they gave me, but no joy as yet.

I think i'll pick up another filter tomorrow and see if that helps any.

Are you getting noise or echo on a phone plugged into any of the filters?

What settings have they given you?

Wish I could remember!!! It was the two numbers under the encapsulation that a guy on the Techie help line get me to adjust. But as it didn't seem to do anything, i never gave it another thought

Can't say as i've noticed any difference, except one night last week when we had no dial tone!!

It is worth giving them a phonecall and getting the following information:

VPI

VCI

Encapsulation type

Username (in full)

Password (just to be sure)

My initial suggestion would be they have screwed up your account details. Do netgear routers offer connection logs?

Don't know if it helps but I had a trouble free connection with Virgin for years until I got this 'free upgrade'. Now the connection drops randomly, and always when my phone rings off, and I often have to log on/off multiple times to get a decent connection speed. So much for progress.

ADSL 2+ is much more stressful on the router and also some connections such as BE use DSLAMs with a couple of options that many ADSL2+ routers based on certain chips don't support. This can cause a lot of the regular drop outs.

I'd phone virgin and make sure your router is on their supported devices list.

For the OP from the data you posted it looks like you're getting the line synch but no PPP connection, which suggests you might well need to put your log in credentials again and check that the router is talking to the right things.

Settings checked today and are as you guessed, still no joy, but have been told that the issue has been passed back from BT to virgin, who have passed it onto "their 3rd part provider" so I don't know if that helps or not!

Virgin only support the Thompson speedtouch router or the Netgear DG834G, so they don't want to even enter into a discussion about my DG834N!

Adorning to virgin the fact that I've had no connection for 2 weeks contitutes an "intermittant" fault, who knows what a full blown fault is then!

Does it ring randomly after hanging up a call and/or a number of unknown or international calls?

A faulty filter can trigger all of these. Just done the outlaws for very similar, along with ringing twice on the hour at night unless the routers left on.

Well I'm not Netgear specialist but I'd wager that the DG834G and DG834N are close enough given the similarity in model number.

I'm not sure if you understood my previous post but Virgin should be giving you more information. The things I posted up should have a value:

VPI (probably 0)

VCI (probably 38 or 101)

Encapsulation (could be VC-Mux or perhaps LLC)

Could you check these with Virgin and get the correct values?

Sorry, my bad! Typing long messages on my iPhone is becoming less of a joy!!

The guy i spoke to yesterday told me this:

VPI = 0

VCI = 38

Encapsulation, he wasn't sure of, but said "it must be VC as they all begin with "V"!"

I've put these into the router, but have to say I thought the encapulation was "LLC", but willing to try anything!
