Just stunning! Honestly, stunning!

I've missed this thread for some reason, and having found it, just sat here for 10 minutes reading your work with my jaw on the floor!

I just can't wait to see how this turns out!

okay after a late night visit from a chap in 'Ermintrude'...

ermintrude_goes_to_monte_carlo.jpg

R4-snow.jpg

driven by a man from ...err Bedford...called Malcolm..

an agreement was struck, cigarettes smoked and alot of laughing commiserating the appalling state of dear Candice, the near deceased Autobot in this thread adventure...was given some hope.

Malcolm...is the WELDING EXTRAORDINAIRE...who runs MIG Welding - The DIY Guide and who previously restored numerous Renault 4's and a few Astons...

completed.jpg

Candice is going to him for some serious metalwork therapy...she is even getting her own website...

In addition to floor pans, frame rails, slam panel, sorting out the hideous roof cut and shut, and numerous other bits and bobs, a delightful bit of jiggery pokery from custom cages will be installed.

Hopefully that'll keep you guys entertained for a little while (sorry progress has slowed!) but I need to go chase some wildfires around Alberta and up into Alaska for a while.

N.B. If anyone is looking to employ a hydrologist/hydrogeologist with specialisations in peat/wildfire/oil pad restoration/peat drought fields in the next 2 years...let me know!

In the mean time I give you a sneek at the newly purchased wheels as exhibited on a 2+2..

(Credit to MartinW for that in progress machine)

Goodnight..

Still great progress for sure!

Those wheels will be perfect

Wowzer !!! Lots of work then ?

I'd love a 240z . . . or an old Skyline (R26 2 door). Got an S13 200sx with an RB26 in it at the mo.

Great stuff. I've been following this rebuild avidly. Keep up the good work

Jig construction has commenced.

New sill purchased.

200 quid's worth of steel for the jig purchased.

Warm enough for Malcolm to start brandishing his tools.

Now on my own mission trying to track down an impossible to

find 'unicorn' part.

'RHS 'Hood Ledge Reinforcement' or 'Airtube'

I'm on the continent where you see these things every week or so.

But can I find this sodding piece?!?! :swear:

Just in case you'd all thought I'd dissappeared off the map...

until next time. ;)

Good luck!

Good stuff. :)

Thats Weird, I was just wondering what was happening with this last night, Hope you find the unicorn!, but avoid chasing the dragon!!!!

Almost finalised the plan for the car with a list of what needs fabricating.

B = bought, M = to be fabricated

Purpose: Fun. Complete and utter idiocy. Doing something for the sake of trying.

Think the original FIAT 500 Abarth. Or the Ford RS200. The simple answer.

Why not.

Target Weight: sub-950kg, wet (60L tank), including all fluids, and driver.

Target HP: 200-220 BHP

Completion Date: Christmas 2011

Budget: I don't know, or frankly care.

Carbon Fibre Parts

Bonnet - B

Boot - B

Headlamp Buckets - M

Front Wings - M (Already own in fibreglass)

Roof - M

Doors - M/B

Propshaft - B

Airdam - B

Sunvisors - M

Lower Front Valence - M

ZG Mirror (Single) - M

Le Mans Bucket Seats - B

1/4 Window Frames - M

Light-Weight Parts

Lexan windows - B

Rear Screen - B

1/4 Windows - B

16" Watanbe Magnesium Rims - B 1 of 4

Wolf Racing Rear CV-Jointed Driveshafts

Custom Manufactured Differential Carriers

Custom Manufactured Transverse Links

Engine & Trans

1.4L T Fiat Multiair engine mounted longitudinally

6 speed Nissan SR gearbox with custom bellhousing

Uprated Abarth ECU

Brakes & Steering

4 pot front vented discs with custom cooling tubes

rear finned drums (lighter)

Sundries

Bag style washer fluids

I realise people will question the engine choice.

I want to drive this thing.

I want to drive it until parts break or explode.

This is not going to sit in a garage to be polished.

With escalating fuel prices, it makes sense to future proof this somewhat now.

 Thus Wangan Midnight Racer...can still prowl the streets at night

All that work and you want to fit a 1.4? emoticon-0106-crying.gif

What I was thinking...

Seems it would be more fun with some big turbo v6/v8!

Progress...

New Rear control arms fabbed up. Save about 6lbs per side

dsc00424r.jpg

Japan/European Spec Tailights bought - these things are like hens teeth, finding a pair was hard! not to mention pricey.

april2010004large.jpg

arixcoltdimg600x4501160.jpg

A bit of fibreglass bought (the previous fibreglass wings I had weren't really in salvagable condition, even with a new gelcoat)

Malcolm has been working on his Renault 4 a far bit to get it ready for a Rally in France, having seen the 240z shell a week or so ago when I was back in the country for a wedding, I'm happy to let him off for the slow progress, not much you can do when half the battle is searching for parts that simply can't be fabricated - i.e. a new roof. With that now located, progress should speed up considerably over the next few months. Keep an eye on his update page - http://www.vord.net/cars/240z/

Wow he's done some interesting stuff. Seems like a bit of a character :)

Superb, keep it up!

Does seem like progress atleast!

This thing really is going to be a money pit isn't it!! Should be well worth it though! :)

Moneypit.

Phft. Certainly costs less on what it costs politicians to print leaflets telling us how amazing they all are. So in that respect, bearing in mind how much undeniable joy it will be to hoon around Europe. In THAT respect, it'll be the cheapest joy ever to experience.

Joy my friends, that monkey and I crafted.

So far when you consider how much an equivalent second hand Elise is, I think you lot would be surprised how little I've spent. (thus far...on a car with no engine, gearbox or brakes...or roof... )

Oh and when it is done.

I'm totally crashing a Skoda meet. ;)

Certainly something undeniably 'pleasurable' about making something your own.

I've been Reading this from the start and your sense of humour is brilliant ;-). Loving the progress keep it up bud ;-)

About time.

In between driving around forest fires in Western Canada, I had time to read some of Malcolms updates..

bodystrippedlarge.jpg

It went for a roof chop to replace the cut and shut pillar job.

railremovedlarge.jpg

The bent front portion of the left frame rain was removed - with several thousand spotwelds drilled out to do so.

flatteningraillarge.jpg

oldandnewlarge.jpg

internalslarge.jpg

New one cut, measured, welded.

trialfitraillarge.jpg

Fitted.

The main problem with doing any of this work has been not wanting to start chopping the shell up without a replacement roof lined up - without it, the shell will inevitably distort.

So hopefully, this will do the trick assuming the remnants of the C-pillar are long enough. If not I'm going to track one down over here in Canada and ship it back.
