Dug out an old motorbike hemlet - will it be OK for castle combe on Saturday?

Featured Replies

Thanks to Makefish I have managed to source my own helmet for Saturday, but my passenger was still short of a helmet and we don't fancy renting one.

I remembered I'd borrowed a helmet off my uncle about three years ago when we first got our quad bike - I've dug it out, washed it a bit and would now like Briskoda's opinion on if it would be approved for use on the action day at Castle Combe this Saturday :)

It's a Shoei Helmet. It used to have a British Standard number sticker on it but it's fallen off having been subject to moisture :(

I have attached a couple of piccies that may help.

In the inside of the helmet it says TF-280V but I am not sure if that is a model number of the helmet or something else.

Thanks a lot,

Ed

i suppose it depends on how much your head is worth to you really??

£20 or thereabouts.. ;)

I know I'll get a telling off from all the bikers here but I see it this way.

It will be just Briskodians on track and we have on the whole agreed we're going to be sensible. I have said I'm going to be taking it easy at the back and not pushing the limit of grip. The chances of us having an accident are in my opinion much lower than when I drive on the road - the only reason I'm wearing a helmet at all is because it's a requirement of the track day.

So the only thing that really matters is that I'm allowed on track with that helmet.

Only when I start doing track days more seriously and as 'motorsport' rather than a 'show' will I worry about how much my head is worth :)

Sorry, but that's just the way it is. I appreciate that the £10 head £10 helmet saying is true - but really, I don't have the inclination to spend money on an expensive helmet at the moment.

I was about to sell my Caberg Justissimo if you're interested. Only had it on a couple of times.

Would that helmet be approved for normal car track day use? If so please could you PM me with a price & the size of the helmet. :)

I hope its ok as I'm planning on using a bike helmet. Can't see why not, after all a bike helmet is designed to protect your head if you come off a bike and start bouncing along a road.

:+1:for the bike helmets

I've borrowed a tasty black item with flames off my uncle which he uses for bike track days!

Ah well if so many are depending on bike helmets they must be fine :D

It seems OK to me. :)

Depends on wheter its been dropped or crashed.

As long as it's under 5 years old it will be fine.

I'm almost certain that it is older than 5 years old - if this is the case is it not legal, or just deemed by many to be 'unsafe'?

I am certain it hasn't been crashed. It also hasn't been dropped but has had a few stone chips hit it in it's time by the look of it :D

Hell, mine's nearly 5 years old, but I don't think age comes into it. As long as it is comfortabe and secure I don't see a problem. I only prefer my open face one as it allows great visibility. :)

old "hemlets" can be dodgy to be honest ed.

the composites start to break down and the safety is compromised.

you would be better trying to borrow 1 if you can .

pity its not oulton as i have 3 now ive sold the bike .

:D Thanks for the advice!

Jeezus, anyone would think you were about to embark on a 24 hour race in a side car judging by some of the comments  ............................. for what you'll be up to in your Fabia that helmet will be fine and don't let anyone let you think otherwise ;)

yes that is true steve, and it's not exactly warp factor speeds, but most track scrutineers should insist on inspecting stuff like helmet to make sure they meet the relevant msa regulations for track days

I have never been on a track day and seen a helmet inspected, as long as what you are wearing looks secure and looks like a crash helmet they will let you on.
