Leftsided Drift

Featured Replies

Well, I've had a look but can't find it on the forum, but does anyone else's Octavia drift to the left if you take your hands off the steering wheel?

Yep. Think it's a known VAG feature. Mine did until I had new tyres and the tracking done at the same time - seems a lot better now.

My Fabia used to be quite pronounced in doing it until I had the track rod something or other replace :D I know the Fabia courtesy car I had did it, and I've heard it's a VAG-car trait, although if it's pulling significantly to the left, it might indicate a problem.....

Not sure how much is a pronouced drift, I do seem to have to continously compensate for the drift though

You can get it tracked to take the drift into consideration.

I paid AmD

They all do that Guv......... :D

Yeah, they do all do that, in spite of getting the tracking / alignment done twice ! ;)

Adrian - I paid the same

Some roads are quite heavily cambered to the left too.

I can only talk about the octavia

Yes the left one is shorter but the right one is twice as thick, this should even out torque steer.

Most drifting to the left is due to drainage camber on the road. This can be counter acted by setting up the suspension with slightly more negative camber on the left hand side than the right.

Mine has been OK from new with absolutely no drift when on a flat road. Proof that drift isn't 'genetic' to VAG cars.... :)

I have had my Octy Vrs 2 days (new) and there is no drift at all under sensible driving. Mindyou when you open the taps it can be interesting on an uneven road. :D

Mine didn't drift.. until today. Had 2 new tyres fitted on the front (toyo Proxes T1-R), then swapped the fronts for the rears (Conti Sport Contact) , and now it drifts. Hey hum back to the fitters on Saturday to see if they can sort it.

I have just bought (last Friday) a brand new Octavia vRS. The same day I took it on a 250 mile journey to help run it in. I took my hands off the wheel when I was on the motorway and found that it drifted off to the left. It didn't dive to the left but it drifted off quite quickly. It happened regardless of whether I was in the left, middle or righthand lane. Therefore it can't have been the camber of the road. The car's booked in at the dealer next week for them to check it out. Any thoughts on what they should be looking at, if anything?

Not strictly true. Sometimes Motorways are built at an angle. They actually slope down from the outside lane to the hard shoulder, at a shallow angle.

Very true Colin, drains are usually on the hard shoulder so the drainage is that way.

But get them to check the front camber, in particular the balance of it. If the subframe has been off at sometime you can bet unless it had full four wheel alignment it will be out.

Mine doesn't dive to the left, but driving on a flat mway, for example, outside line, if I take my hands off the steering wheel, it will start to drfit left. It feels as though I have to compensate for this when driving. The only time it doesn;t is when the road slopes slightly to the right.
