toyo t1r tyres with severe lack of grip.

Another T1-R buyer here. To echo previous comments, I've never had what you're described from fitting there and I've had a fair few sets (not as many as Dave though!)

If you're certain fitment is correct and alignment/geometry is spot on, I'd give Toyo a tinkle and see what they say. They might even be able to look up batch info based on what info's on the sidewall. I had reason to contact them a few years ago and they were a helpful bunch.

...and while understeering tyres were "flat"? Didn't wheels walk too much on tyres' sides? (I hope I am understandable notwithstanding my poor english).

I solved much of my understeer with a somewhat stiff rear ARB. You installed also a front one. Perhaps you might revise the settings? Did you try asking tyre shop and or swap rear to front to understand if it is only a tyre issue?

I have the front tyres set to the factory spec 2 bar again now. I have trialled with different pressures from 1.8 bar upto 2.2 bar but there isnt much difference

The +2PSI suggestion for the Toyos is based on several of us having observed an under-inflation wear pattern when running the Skoda OEM pressures with them. We make no claim that it improves grip, mostly because it doesn't.

Your English is entirely understandable, and the underlying chassis engineering is also correct.

I've been running T1Rs on the Furby for nearly 3 years, and found then to be very good. Changed to another Toyo tyre once and they were floaty and unresponsive so i contacted Toyo and they replaced them with T1Rs free of charge.

Recently changed to Yokohama pradas and they are exceptional.

TBH my experience with recent premium brand tyres (I would include Toyo as a premium brand) is that they are all pretty good. We used to fit Toyo, Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental to high performance cars (mainly Japanese models such as Impreza, Evo, Supra etc) and never really had any issues at all. Recently I fitted some Kumho ECSTA's (KU32 I think) to a heavily modded Impreza and the customer was very happy, especailly given the low price!

I have no direct experience with the T1R, but my experience with previous generations of Toyo tyres has been very good. Give them a little more time.

One thing you may wish to check is that they are not 'grey import' tyres manufactured for the Asian market and shipped 'unofficially' into the UK. This happened a few years ago with some batches of Toyo tyres.

How can you check if they are not official imports?

I use T1-R's on my mk1 vRS and they are excellent, a lot better than the Conti's they replaced.

On another note, you say they start understeering and going wider and wider... I test drove 2 mk2 vRS's at Allam's (petrol & diesel) and they both seemed to like to do this with plenty of scrubbing with the standard rubber. Just thought that was something to do with the mk 2 :rofl:

If you're used to handling like my A4 Elegance, I can see persistant (rather than limitting) understeer being an issue. Mine actually oversteers (mild geometric, not lurid tailslides) in long high-speed corners, but the nose washes out if you really push it to the limit.

Yes, and this is where a check-up call to Toyo can be very helpful, before you go back to the retailer - quite well armed with information :D

the ARBs were fitted when i had my ultrac sessantas on and the grip was huge when cornering with understeer only coming under sever cornering acceleration. so im not to sure if the mods will have this affect. hoever i have been giving her some severe stick this last two days and the grip is most definately improving. Also I have had 4 wheel alignment done since the work.

I see, so it's a tyre related issue. Perhaps they have a different sensitivity to other factors influencing handling... anyway happy things are improving with break-in :)

As a side note, before having WALK installed, with my RARB I already got a satisfying correction of body understeer, most correction when hard accelerating while cornering. I'm a bit stubborn but - if I were you -I'd try a somewhat softer setting on front ARB or a stiffer on RARB to reduce understeer even more. With WALK you have the chance to get improved traction, as I had.

I used several diferent types of tyre on my Octy during my ownership.

My favourites were the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics and my least favourites were probably the factory fit Contis. I can't remember anything like you describe but my preferred tyre pressures were 34psi front and 32psi rear.

I had Koni FSD's and Eibachs if that helps.

My friendly neighbouthood wheel alignment specialist also set my rear camber to -1.25 degrees as per the Skoda technical bulletin.

Normally for me, new tyres at my local fitter, pull out at the bottom of the rather steep hill there on, esp off, 3k, dump the clutch, plenty of squeal, viola - instantly scrubbed in tyres :P

This year I bought some Toyo T1-R s from recommendations on here and I suppose I can't fault them. When my father has driven my car he has commented they do not have as much "crisp turn in" compared to the Goodyear F1 GSD3s.

It's just a shame that you can not get the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas or Goodyear F1 Assymetrics in less than 17 inch for my Furby with 16s.

Did you buy 2 tyres or 4?

If you only bought 2 then it's probably just a mismatch in performance charateristics of the different tyres.

Try putting the T1Rs on the rear & see what happens.

Same here, I tested Contis, 2 sets of PZero Rosso and - finally - Eagles which are really great! I'm used to run higher pressures with satisfaction (I do a lot of highway) and had it on different cars and tyres, but I guess it's a matter of taste.

180miles today and now loads more grip. problem solved, for some reason the tyres just seemed to take for ever to bed in not sure why but the grip is pretty immense although not in the same league as the ultrac sessantras

I checked the tyres on the car and threy tyres are orignal not copied and the tread pattern is facing the correct way. thanks for the thoughts.

the conclusion is that the understeer must have been caused by the newness off the tyres. I have now done over 600 miles and gave her some hardcore abuse today to see where the limits were, and although they are not as good as the ultrac sessantas, the grip is very good. much happier now. im just suprised how long they took to bed in

I'm also glad you ahve found satisfaction finally :)

I usually found around 200 miles of very brisk driving, or 500 miles of normal driving bedded them in nicely.

I was told by a man I regard as an expert in tyres that bedding tyres in requires getting them hot, letting them cool a afew times over, and not ask alot of them in the way of grip for the first few hundred miles.

i swapped the 2 rear sessantas onto the front today and the toyos onto the rear, car is back to the way it was. the toyos are not in the same league as the sessantas by a long shot. going to keep them like this now i think. much more confidence inspiring with huge grip and when the toyos wear out, sessantas back on without a thought
