Another Supermarket vs Brand Debate

Featured Replies

Hi

Another wonderful debateabout is here any difference between Supermarket Fuels and Branded Fuels.

What is your opinions on Economy, Proformance and ability to care for your engine etc.

Also what is your opinions on BP Ultimate and Shell V-Power(s) etc etc.

I will be very interested in all your thoughts :D

Timelord

My VAG dervs past and present have never like supermarket fuel, Jet or Total. My dervs have always seemed to like BP and Shell diesel extra.

Not sure about the V-Powers/BP Ultimates of this world, tried them over a period of 3 or 4 tanks and the car seems to be more perky but that might just be me trying to justify the extra cost of the stuff to myself

Millers diesel power sport 4 on the other hand...........................;)

Try 2 tanks of each and use what YOUR car likes, and makes you happy.

Every car's different (even with several identical engines), and likes different fuel.

Whatever is cheapest + a shot of millers DSP4 every few months and some forte once a year.

never had a problem with the diesel i get from Sainsburys , i've used it for 95% of the 67k miles i've put on the car in the best part of 5 years

Sainsburys use City diesel.

BS EN 590.

That is all that a derv needs and you will get more variation depending on how long the fuel is sat in the tanks etc.

I would have replied properly, but I think I died of boredom due to the number of times this question gets asked, and run through. Still if you like I'm happy to sell snake oil to anyone who wants it.

I always fill up at the start of my journey at the start of the day, so I always use Shell extra from the same petrol station in my town. Last year there was only once I didn't fill up there because I was in Birmingham travelling home from the Autosport Show. This year has been similar but I filled with BP in Dover. I don't know why but I try to avoid supermarket fuel, probably because they may have less additives in it. I don't use VPD, but the Millers stuff instead.

Always used Asda as it's cheap. Except for my golf, which ran mostly on vegetable oil. If you are putting in V-power and that nonsense, speak to cheezemonhai about his snake oil. Costs a lot less and does the same job.

What's this snake oil you speak off? :D

You can have two forms:

1) You pay a member of brisky £10 per tank of fuel you use, you look away and they tell you that they have done something, but actually do nothing.

You notice an improvement and come back for more time after time.

2) You pay a member of brisky £20 and ask for the ultimate snake oil. Said member of brisky then either urinates, takes a dump or shovels some local dog mess in your fuel tank while you're looking away and sends you on your way.

You notice an improvement and come back for more time after time.

It can also be purchased from any chemist in the form of a wonderful tablet called placebo ;)

I was put off supermarket fuel for a little while as my old car (Peugeot) was affected by the fuel fiasco a year or so ago.

My car had to go in and have the fuel drained out and sensors replaced.

To Tesco's credit I got a full refund on all the work carried out and got my money back for the defective fuel and that was within a couple of weeks.

Since then I must admit I've been enjoying the "Double Clubcard Points" from Tesco and have been increasing our balance quite a lot.

The two closest Tesco's both sell 99 RON Super if I'm feeling flush or else ths standard unleaded does fine.

my vRS hasn't complained yet.

Our mini gets better MPG from Shell than it does from asda. Haven't used anything else since we noticed this, although could be due engine being run-in now it's got 10k miles on it. On the superb 2.5tdi there was a noticeable difference between ultimate and normal fuel (on low down torque and idling noise). The 1.9 doesn't seem to care what I put in it.

I get a bit less mpg with Tesco super compared to bp Ultimate, my nearest v-power forecourt is 20 miles away in a direction I never travel so that's out for me.

If I remember correctly I've seen about 20-30 miles better of with BP fuel than tesco but it is a bit pricey.

Also feel like the car is a bit happier with BP but that might just be the placebo effect.

I used to run a Audi A4 1.9TDI 130bhp Sport and done a 50 mile commute each day, I did pass the Shell forecourt daily and found I got better mpg with v-power and the car was noticably more responsive

I use branded fuel and avoid the premium stuff. All the fuel is refined to the same standard but the brands like Esso & Shell add their own detergent packages. Hope this helps: I use Esso normally.

I treated the Furbie Vrs to a tank full of that expensive BP stuff no smoke, now I've put a Tankfull of Morrisons Diesel in and she's Smokes from the tail pipe.........................
