Octy II + subwoofer

Featured Replies

I did the tweeter mod yesterday in my Vrs and I was quite pleased with the result. :)

I have Stream mp3 as HU and was wondering adding a sub + amp to the system.

Only question is how to get signal to the amp. I'm trying to figure out if there could be line out in stream allthough it is not documented.

Elsawin says that sound system is only available to Audience HU. According to elsa the sound system amp has low level inputs from radio and CAN control to turn the amp on and off. Then I checked pinouts of Stream and Audience and they are identical. So where does the low level signal come from?

Could I get line out from pins 3 (L), 8(line ground), 9 ®. These are the same pins that MFD2 has line out. Pics are at VRStu's homepage.

Or is line converter only option for adding sub + amp?

I managed to put one in mine using a speaker to linelevel convertor that I took a feed from the stock wiring loom and hid the convertor box behind the panel at the side of the glove box. To power on and off i took a feed from the powered aerial soldering a wire coming from the circuit board underneath the Stream. This then fed a relay which sent a switch power to the amp.

This seemed to work ok at the beginning turning the amp on and off with the radio. Only trouble was that the behaviour starts to change when you get out of the car a lot durning the day. The powerfeed seemed to lock off the relay and not turn the amp on and to remedy I have to unplug the relay and plug back in for it to work.

I then fitted a potentiometer with a built in switch so I could vary the bass level and when the feed locked off i could switch it of and on again to make it all work.

I'm not expecting you to follow all that but in essence it is doable but with a lot of faff. In the end I've fitted an Alpine system in and not looked back. :)

I'll second going for a decent system with low level inputs, far easier and more refined ;)

Paired with a set of Vibe components, and my Alpine sub/amp it hardly suffers distortion unless your pushing the Pioneer headunit to its limits!

give a member called gillywibble a shout he has successfully done it to his, yet we still await his write up.

Thanx for the reply guys.

I want to keep my Stream HU because of rear parking sensor displays image in it.

Yesterday I started making a fiberglass enclosure for a 10" sub. The sub is going in the left side compartment in my boot. As for the amp goes I'm going to use one with high level inputs and put it under drivers seat. The amp doesn't need remote because it senses signal from high inputs and turns itself on when needed.

Today I'm going to add some more layers to the sub enclosure. So back to sniffing fumes :faint:

The stream is the biggest problem to the Octys sound system. The OEM speakers are better than reasonable if you power them right.

I've currently got an Alpine IDA-x001 powering them and they sound sweet (you get direct ipod with this unit to)

Change the head unit

If you're still not happy you'll have your low level outputs and remote amp switch-on ready for your speaker system

I have to concur with the Stream HU. I never really understood what poor quality sound was until I heard mine :( Midrange is extremely harsh and you just can't get a good balance. But as stated above the integration with other elements of the car means that I am loathe to give it up. Columbus upgrade I think!

The columbus doesnt show your parking sensor display, it doesn't even mute the sound. This can be sorted by replacing the park assist module to the new version and some rewiring of said unit. You can always use the mirrors.......:D

The original Stream is a truely awfull headunit with regards to sound quality. The latter Stream MP3 headunit is much better, has a better quality amp made with better components. The factory fit systems in latter octavias can sound much better than you think given the right settings and a decent audio source.

When playing MP3s for example, go for a high bitrate, low ones around 128K tend to sound very shrill and lack bass. Fiddling with the tweeters, just masks what is already poor to start with by removing part of the audio frequency range. Play a decent shop bought audio CD and the sound difference is like night and day.

The stream MP3 does have a lineout, and it should be possible to connect a subwoofer upto this using a low pass filter.

It's great to hear that Stream MP3 has lineout connection. Can someone verify that it's available from those pins that the starter of this thread referenced to (please see quote below)? Has someone actually used that lineout succesfully?

If it's there then it's only about getting the connector of right type, doing some easy soldering, and presto, lineout is there. It would be nice if no separate line level connector had to be purchased and installed.

Hi.

I can confirm that there's no line out in Stream mp3. McRS ordered the green connector and wires that connect to original harness. We tried pins 3, 8 and 9 in his car and there were no signal. So we spliced into front speaker wires and he'll add line convertor later.

I've done this to my car also but without the convertor as my amp has high level inputs. Amp is under the drivers seat and 10" Rockford Fosgate sub is in the left hand side of the trunc. Also I've done that tweeter trick. I'll try to post pics later.
