Beware of tyre-fitters recommendations - do some research

Featured Replies

...Also to add, have you seem some of these garages which will fit tyres you buy off the net? And you pick at the rest of us! lol

give phil a shout on here, he use to fit tyres and is sound and knowledgeable. im thinking of michelin energy for my next set as i dont go round racing everywhere and spend most time traveling to and from work with an average speed of 35mph. But to be fair i think i would be happy with budget tyres as i personally cant notice any difference in any of the tyres i have had on my car.

For the folks above who seem to think tyre fitters are all on commission well we are not! Infact i don't get commission for mechanical work even, i'm looked after with a good enough wage to not get greedy.

Highly offensive to make some of the comments above i wouldn't dream about doing it with you all.

Could have been worse mate. At least they didn't lump you in with RE Agents, Journos & Politicians:thumbup:

Just fitted Falken ZE 912's (225/45/17) on the front along with brand new wishbones, they have the best wet weather grip of any tyre I have ever used. I cant comment on their wear rate yet, only have them on a week. These cost 93 euros each including delivery to Ireland !!

Thanks for all your comments so far - seems to be a wide range of different tyres used, and variations in individual reviews for the same type.

Have just looked on the review site and AvonZV5's come out very well - anyone tried them yet ?

My front tyres are reaching the end of their useful life - they're down to the tread wear markers on the inside, but about 3mm on the outside.

I was looking for the Sessantas on tinterweb, and emailed Blackcircles and event tyres for some quotes, as they didn't list them.

Event tyres wanted £133 per tyre, and Blackcircles told me they can't get them! I know Mytyres do them for around £110, but then I've still got the hassle of finding someone to fit them.

Anyone know of any Vredestein dealers in the south?

Had these on the Roomy for 10k and they have been fantastic, really good in all conditions and inspire great confidence. Really good for the cash (£61 each for 4 fitted). They are wearing well and expect to get about 25-30k out of the set.

This lot are listed as a vred seller and seemed to have good prices on the tyres when i asked about them.

Flintstone Tyres

Go for the Sessantas, Just fitted them to the wifes VRS Octy and they are great in the wet and dry. I have just fitted them to my CR295 Focus ST all round and even on that they are great.

Elite in dagenham are the cheapest for them 18's, the only other tyres I have tried that are as good are the new F1's then the MPS'2 are even better but you pay a lot more for those.

I had the Falkens on my old 2.0 Focus (No boo'ing please lol ) I had the 452's and then the Avon ZZ3's

The Falkens did do the 512's as well and they are good for the money, but I wouldn't really recommend them on the VRS, as for Avons ZZ3 they were great not sure if they have change the compounds but they were very good value for the money.

Black Swan in Fareham - just had 4 Sessantas fitted - they matched the fitted price at Elite Tyres in Rainham. Elite are great but I no longer live in the east of London!

Good service ask for Ian and he will probably remember me Gary (the fellow fishermen) with the Blue VRS!

First time I used them and will not be the last.

Black Swan in Fareham

Did you mean Farnham? Just googled Black Swan tyres and they come back as being in Farnham.

Found these, never used them, but list the Vredesteins for £96

mytyres.co.uk - Search Results: 225/40 R18 W

Well spotted - that's an amazing price compared to the others they are selling - cheaper than Kumhos and Hankooks

Includes delivery as well

That was for an 18 inch wheel size search btw. I would hope 17's may be cheaper.

Thay have the Falken 452's at £88. Although my local tyre fitters didn't charge me that for mine.

Oops yes sorry Farnham ! - And the e is nowhere near the n !!!

I Paid £97 each fitted for the 18" 225/40/18 BTW. They charge a £1 to dispose of your old tyre - I did not pay this as i sold them on as they had plenty of tread left.

Even with that £1 it is £98 fitted.

Still running them in but they have 200 odd miles on them now. Grip is great wet and dry, road noise - louder than the Dunlop Sport Maxx (front)/Sava Intensa (rear) that were on the car. Economy seems down.

Took a sweeper onto the motorway and gradually pushed the speed - definitely felt more planted. Would say the car also feels more direct when steering. Running at 34PSI front and rear.

Just got an email back from Black Swan - £109.27 each fully fitted for the Sessantas.

Micheldever Tyres are normally very competitive but they would have to specially order the Vred's, hence £157.20

So it looks like Black Swan are the cheapest within reasonable travelling distance.

Hi call therm - talk to Ian and explain your best quote is X - where x is the Elite in Rainham Fitted price . They wil match it - I only had the tyres firred on on Friday 15th May!

When I called without a price to match they were competitive but over £110. Called back a month later said best price quoted was £97.60 can you match it and they did - that was for 18" it really does pay to talk.

Also check the Vred website for dealers closer to you and have the same conversation. let them know the price to match (not necessarily beat) if they can get within 5 to 10 quid the time and petrol svaing alone might make a slightly higher price attractive

Gary

Vreds are often a lot dearer now since the Russians bought them out, Very good tyres and there winter range is excellant too.

The reason why Blackcircles etc are so cheap compared to your regular tyre centre is because of two reasons;

1) They never see the tyres, they literally make a small profit on the tyre which gets sent out from main distribution centres.

2) They import tyres, which is why prices have crept up as the pound is weak.

....Keep all of this in mind when you say tyre centres are ripping you off, They can't buy them as cheap and they have bigger overheads than some folk sat on the net pressing 'order'....It breaks garages balls struggeling to make anything on tyres when people want to get them at cost, A lot of garages will dissapear because of this, Thank God for mechanical work.

  • 3 weeks later...

After all the fuss trying to find Vred's locally at a reasonable price, I bit the bullet and went for 2 Falken 452s - £169 all in for 2 tyres.

Other financial requirements meant the Falkens were the most cost effective at the time, plus I remembered the car is due it's first MOT this month and the Contis were on the wear markers!

Tyre update.

Went for the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas at £88 and a few pence each from Camskill plus £9.60 total delivery direct to a local fitter, who charged me £10 per corner to fit them.

Thought 18's might be harsh compared to the 17's, but so far (and I haven't driven them far) they seem to ride better than the 17" Bridgestones.

Brought a huge :) to my face.

I have Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on the Back (did have on the front and found they were very good) Moved them to the back and put AVON ZZ3 on the front and again found them to be a very very good tyre. My choices would be as follows

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas

Avon ZZ3

Michelin PS2

Any of those (and they are not in preference order) i would be happy with. Like you i don't drive the car on the limit so any of the above will be fine. As for the others i can't comment

Carl:thumbup:

Personally I always go to Micheldever Tyres or Pro-Tyre (also owned by Micheldever). Generally their prices are fantastic and advice very sound.

Agreed - I have had Falkens from them - they suggested them given my requirement for a mid-range tyre; didn't try and sell me something else for £100 a corner.

Managed to avoid falling off the road in the dry or wet so far as well
