Car transportation

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone knew the likely cost and have any recommendations of moving my mk2 golf from melksham in wiltshire down to portsmouth in hampshire? its about 80miles i think.

I was either going to pay someone or hire a trailer and use my mates car to tow it down with.

any help would be appreciated!

I assume from your post that the car doesn't drive???

No unfortunately it doesn't, no tax or MOT :(

and the clutch has gone! lol!

Costs about £1.50 per mile if done by a transporter company.

From £1.50 per mile £120 seems cheaper than hiring a trailer, driving it down and then driving the car and empty trailer back IMHO.

Just had my first quote from a company of £250!!! shocking!

can anyone recommend a company?

Try a search on Ebay - there are a few car transport companies on there.

Probably best to find one local to you to help get a good price

Don't make the same mistake as someone I knew who towed a vw camper van in anticipation of doing it up. Flipped the trailer and that was the squashed end of that project.

I just moved my mk1 golf 30 miles for £40, I called my local trailer hire place and the chap had a flatbed recovery truck.

A good option is if you have any recovery guys that live close that work shifts and the truck lies in their drive during the day/night just knocking the door and offering them some cash , I have a few around here that was my next option.

Saving that take out some AA cover on it, wait a few days and tell them it broke down and you want it recovering to home :P

Thats expencive ! I would charge £110 if I lived near Melksham, sorry but I don't !!

But if you get it moved make sure they are well insured, my standard insurance is

50K and if I specify it goes to 150K
