Documents in car?

Featured Replies

What documents related to the car do you carry with you at all times, taking into account what is at risk if car is stolen / broken into?

Things like service book are obviously vulnerable (ie increases thieves ability to sell on easily) but what about insurance documents? Surely it's a good idea to have the certificate, or a copy, just in case you need to give your info to somebody else or the Police etc?

I carry nothing to be honest. If the police pull you, they know what you have and don't have anyway.

The handbook and thats it.

If the police want anything else I'll let them have it later.

Only ever been pulled once in 18 years mind you, so it's never really been an issue for me

Nothing, unless I'm away from home for more than 7 days, when I carry all the things you might be required to produce.

Nothing , Not even the Manual.

i keep the manual, service book etc in car along wid breakdown card and bits. insurance is kept in the house along wid the other legals, unless like someone said above i go away and may need it so take insurance along then.

Just the manual.

Likewise - just as well considering what happened to me recently

Nothing - why would you?

Service book and manual.

But on thinking I'll probably move the service book into the house.

I dont keep anything in mine, and leave it all at home.

Manual, photocopies of insurance certificate and log book.

I keep the manuals and service book in the secret compartment in the glovebox. If the police stop you, you normally have 7 days to show it at a police station. I don't even have a driving licence card, only the paper one.

Has anyone got a soft leather case to keep these in as mine is a hard plastic one? My mothers 53 Fabia has the soft one.

Manuals and service book.

The police know if you have tax, insurance, MOT etc at the roadside so you dont need them. 7 day wonders no longer exist for these either AFAIK

Shows how long ago I used too worry about getting pulled :rofl:

LOL, they only apply now for defects and illegal plates etc.

You don't need them in the UK but if you go driving in Euroland you must have them to hand, or it's a on the spot fine.

I only carry the manual in case i need to know any details on the car, dash lights, tyre pressures, etc. Ive only had to produce once after overtaking a 10mph learner on a 30, passing a police van waiting to pull out as I did, doh! Had to produce just to waste my time because I wasted theirs more than anything else.

Thats the only time tho

Producers do still exist - if a copper wants to give you one he can. Letter of the law is that it is an offence not to produce ON DEMAND your licence, insurance and MOT certificate. Legal geeks can read Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 s164(1).The offence is committed when you fail to produce your licence etc at the side of the road. However, super geeks can go on to read s164(8) of the same act which says (paraphrased by me) ... "it shall be a defence for any person prosecuted under this section to show that within 7 days he produced it in person at a police station" So whilst you should carry it, the law recognises that nobody in their right mind would leave their documents lying around in their car, and gives you a defence if you produce within 7 days - hence the dreaded "producer" that coppers can (and frequently do) hand out. Personally I carry nowt in the car, and just my photocard licence in the wallet. Roadside checks of the PNC and MIB databases will show whether the car (checked by reg) is taxed, insured and MOTd. Checks on the driver (by name and DOB) will show whether he is licenced, provisionally entitled, disqualified or anything else.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the manual and service book in the car, and carry my photocard licence in my wallet, along with policy details (Policy & Phone numbers).

Nothing in the car. Insurance ref and number on my phone.

I don't carry anything with me and don't leave anything in the car with my address details on it.
