Engine management upgrade for the 170CR

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend an engine management system upgrade for the 170CR engine? My preferred option would be bluefin (i.e. you can reset it if required) but Superchips haven't brought a bluefin out for this engine, only the older 170 PD version is catered for

I'm looking for something straightforward to fit that will give reliable gains in the mid range.

Currently, I'm not aware of a remap from any of the more major companies. There are a couple of smaller ones offering maps, but they are not reversible by the end user, and neither to they come with any kind of warranty.

I spoke to Superchips about a week ago, and they tell me that their remap for the 170CR Octy vRS is very close to being release. Hopefully, that should mean that the Superb can also me done. I'm guessing they'd just need a guinea pig car.

Thanks Bagpuss, that sounds promising. Considering that Skoda and the other VAG companies are all using the 170CR engine now it would seem reasonable that companies like Superchips put some development effort into it as the more applications, the more likely business.

I'll check Superchips again in a couple of weeks & post here if I see anything new. I take it you are considering the same upgrade?

I have been chatting to my friends at REVO and they have had my car for a few days for some "developement" excercises namely on the existing ECU code. Once this has been reliably trialed I will consider having it. REVO also produce a little extra attachment for reverting the code back to its Standard form via the OBD port. If anyone wants any further info please send me a personal message. I have to say that the current 170CR Engine goes very well..Do we want that little bit extra?

Of course we want that little bit extra!

For me, the motorway acceleration with the 170CR is reasonable, but could be better.

It's not much different to the 140pd Golf I had previously. I suspect the power to weight ratios would be very similar so if I could get the Superb improved by, say, 20 to 30 bhp and 40 to 50 lb/ft (which should be achievable whilst retaining reliability) then that would be worth paying for.

Practically, it would mean 6th gear would be some use for overtaking rather than changing down all the time, or am I just lazy?

You will always need to drop out of 6th gear for peak power

Re. Superchips remap for the 170 CR:

I was informed weeks ago they now have a remap. I checked with my local Superchips and they said they now have one and have used it on a few cars. So both Superchips main base and my local dealer have said they have recently produced a remap. I queried whether they meant for the PDi and they definitely confirmed it was for the CR. Bluefin have not got one yet but soon should have one (even though I would think it should be similar to the one used by the Superchips agents). They said it is taking longer to do for the CR then it was for the PDi - something along the lines of, once you did the PDi in one form, it was easily adaptable for others.
