Remapped power... a con?!

Featured Replies

Right i've had the fabia a while now and have came to the conclusion that a remap is pretty pointless alone :thumbdwn:

I have blown up the clutch... and popped two boost hoses along the way :thumbdwn:

also i have noticed you can only get one good run from the power... then its just heat soak all the way... 4th gear is a nightmare... your straight back down to standard power... :thumbdwn:

...not good

Anyone else running the OEM cooler get aweful heat soak?

only when its really hot,i would agree with the hidden re map costs tho,as to see proper power you need a clutch,so in actual fact a re map costs 1500 quid, but mine is a lot quicker than a standard car,and even pulls significantly on clutch friendly re maps too

it's not really a con, just maybe going into it without all the facts? what about a hybrid with SMIC...

Sounds like you might need to get the car wound back a bit perhaps?

You just need to forget about the costs and hybrid it. End of, then you can say "my fabia" instead of "my mates"

well i have got the single mass flywheel and clutch combo... rr'd at 175bhp and 347lb-ft torque...

heat soak is everytime... you get one good run through the gears .... then Nothing... its like hitting a brick wall

yeah but the costs are rediculous... id much rather buy a 205 with an mi16 and blow a hybrid lol

Well you just require a FMIC. Try and do one on the cheap

yeah i was thinking that... should be able to rustle somthing up for around the 300quid mark id say :)

maybe next year if i still have it

We're going through all the same info again, but that torque figure is rediculous on a std KKK turbo. No wonder it's struggling and you're getting frustrated.

Peg the torque back to 300lb/ft and you'd have a much better all-rounder IMO, with the setup you currently run.

A FMIC will obviously help towards avoiding heatsoak, but you'll notice more lag when running one with a std turbo. I have a Laguna IC spare you could use, if you want to go down the DIY route, and get some suitable pipework ordered. The Laguna one is popular with the Mk1&2 Golf boys....

Looking at hybrids, the costs needn't be extortionate. Go direct to Turbo Dynamics for £1000, or look out for a suitable Garrett unit you can send them for uprating.

Who did your remap?

If your Fabia wasn't new when you bought it, the clutch could have been extremely worn when you started and it's well known that remaps often cause premature clutch failures. The boost hoses would indicate you have a pretty aggressive remap.

The problem with trying to run your car like it's at the Top Gear test track is that they tend to break at the Top Gear test track....

If you want a car that's engineered for 175bhp or whatever then buy a PD170. Remaps are a 'freebie' - the problem is everyone wants to extract a bit too much freebie. If you had a 160bhp map with about standard torque you'd still see a decent improvement in day-to-day performance and it wouldn't have worn your clutch out.

Someone at one of the tuners (it might have been Allard) that 250bhp would cost me £10,000 if I wanted it for use day-to-day or £6000 if I was prepared to stand at the side of the road once in a while while the AA came or £4500 and the AA man would be on my Christmas Card list.

The performance is there, it's just not there consistently or always reliably for the £300 they charge you for a remap.

As said, a reliable 250bhp will cost a fortune.

Shifty spent somewhere near 20k 'improving' his fabia, on top of buying it, and subsequently lost a fortune, but had big fun and satifaction from doing it.

The car has never, ever let me down, is massive fun to drive, and runs at full whack for hours on end without missing a beat, but I wouldn't have done it myself, because of the costs involved.

I can't say I agree with that as each car is different and they have their own weak points. My Audi S2 runs a chipped ECU on track and never misses a beat all day, and it gets thrashed! It can take it.

I hate to say this as I know it'll upset someone, but the Fabia vRS is built down to a price and it's not particularly over engineered (apart from the actual engine itself). I never had any problems with either of my two remapped PD130s and both of them got a proper thrashing at some point in their lives and coped perfectly fine (apart from the brakes on A4, it was a heavy car).

It also depends heavily on the map, of course.

Just my 2p

As for the heat soak in 4th gear. I've whipped out my foglights and always make sure my intercooler's clean. Logs have shown my intake is usually cooler than any customers with fog lights etc.

i also did that but to no avail... the car also looked silly lol

remap is a star performance one... was already done when i bought it from skoda on 37k miles.... by 40k it had blown

i've even managed to get it into limp mode due to heat soak

You'll also find boost creaping in higher gears. Boost in mine is 1.6bar peak untill you get into 5th and 6th at which point it starts to head for 1.75bar which i regulate with my right foot.

5 laps of the nurburgring in mine and never went into limp mode. It did suffer heavilly from heatsoak as you reach the lowest part of the circuit and have to start climbing again, but never went into limp...

yep mine with a proper re map on did lap after lap of the ring and many other tracks without going into limp mode......must be michaels special mapping ability eh?:D

Oooo, i dont know about that Gary, i mapped my car myself...

I was taught by the master though of course ;)

Kev

PS. Fancy donating your diff to a worthy cause? ;)

i don't have a diff anymore:(

I put mine into Limp mode after about 12 laps at the ring but I dropped too low a gear (laps were'nt consecutive though)

Oopsie :)

what about the pikey arch mod?

what about the pikey arch mod?
only works to a point, you just can't overcome the limitations of the smic.

got it lol

Sounds like you got the wrong car.
