That last f****** EGR bolt!!!

Featured Replies

Removed the top two bolts, how the hell do you get the one underneath out?

I've tried everything from angled sockets, mirrors, allen keys etc

Stupid exhaust pipe with its vertical bolts is in the way and doesn't want to budge either.

Heeeellllppppp:mad:

Patience and a great deal of swearing. Be very careful when sticking back together, all too easy to cross thread the booger.

I've been trying for 2 hours without any luck. Trying to undo the bigger ones that attach the pipe that runs from the exhaust at the moment but they wont budge. I've also lost count of the amount times I've dropped the allen key somewhere in to the engine bay.

This better be worth it!

Are you replacing the gasket to cure the stutter? I didn't have too many issues getting mine out (refitting was a different matter), but I only remember removing two bolts so you're probably talking about something different.

As schern says if it is the egr mod there is only two bolts (6mm Alan key) as I

did mine yesterday

It's an ASZ engine so no stutter problems, just trying to remove the EGR valve.

Trying to fit an Allard Race pipe but there is 2 on top and one underneath. It's the EGR valve connected to the manifold that I can't get off because of the last bolt underneath :(

I used an alley key length-ways (long end into the bolt) and then used a pliers to grip the short end to un-do it. Was a bit of a pig.

Cheers guys, I'll give it another go tomorrow. Far too nice to be stuck under a bonnet today!

And make sure the supplied blanking plate with it is fitted directly to the turbo.

Steve

a ball ended allen key helps as well (from memory ) but dont use too much force or it will shear the end off

Cheers, I'll be over at my mates tomorrow and he has a wider range of tools (probably due to owning a mk2 golf GTI :)).

Thanks Wardy, I think it mentions in the instructions to fit it directly to the exhaust side of the turbo so hopefully all will be well.

Once you've removed the 'easy two' put lots of WD40 into the crack. As you turn the allen key turn the EGR. The gasket is a rubber ring and will compress unequally with the extra lubrication. This moves the EGR up a bit and gives just that little bit extra room.

Make sure you've un-bolted everything else first though including any pipework and the pipe that goes between the EGR valve and the turbo.

It's fitted!!!

Thank you to all for help and advice. In the end I changed in to some comfortable shorts, drank Magners throughout the process, and borrowed my friends ball ended allen key and now all is well :)

I'll put some pictures up tomorrow as it looks ace now with the filter/race pipe/stainless steel boost pipe.

Not sure which of the three has made the biggest difference but holy shoot it flies now! Pulls much harder throughout the rev range and is a hell of a lot smoother. Bring on the Milltek and remap!

Thanks again to all.

Cheers,

John
