Nurburgring accident.

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I had a bit of a scary moment on Sunday at the Nurburgring when the rear of the car decided to overtake the front at around 100MPH. Resulted in a front end impact with the barriers and in a bill for 2556 Euros for barrier repairs .

The car is actually not in too bad of a state as it was only a glance and the accident continued for 50 or more meters after impact resulting in only slight deceleration on barrier contact, the barriers are also very soft and saved the car.

The car requires a new front crash beam, a section that sits above this and the framework that houses the radiator. My FMIC was also destroyed along with the bumper, all front trim and grills and the 3 piece engine undertray.

Has anyone got an exploded diagram of the front structure of the Octavia Vrs? All the parts damaged are bolt on bolt off pieces so replacement should be quite simple and the job I’m doing myself. I'd appreciate any part numbers, drawing, information available.

Anyone who knows my car will also understand why I'm gutted to have destroyed an OZ Superleggera alloy too :rotz:.

Thanks guys, any help will be really appreciated as I need to get the car back on the road ASAP.

On a positive note I achieved a timed bridge to gantry run of 8 minutes 38 seconds on the lap previous - I think this was the absolute limit on the car and my talent :(. Also the Bonnet and wings are untouched.

Ouch. :( This is why I never go more than about 90% around that place.

Glad you're ok.

8m38s is a pretty good time!

After all Jezza only managed 9m59s in a much more expensive Jaguar.

Did you have track insurance for the barrier repairs?

Sorry to hear that mate, sounds like you had fun whilst all was good though!

I'd love to go to the ring but i'm too scared of something like that happening.

That's not the spirit! ;):D No harm in going there and just treating it like a fairly progressive B road run, where in fact in my opinion, it is a lot safer than any B road in this country due to the surface being good, and all traffic is flowing in the same direction....

It is my mission to get a sub 9 minute next time I am out there, but there'll be no dashtop clock for me like Jezza did. Will probably just use a fixed camera mount to record laps and just see how fast they are at the video editing stage.

Sorry to hear about this, the important thing is you're ok and the car can be repaired. It could've been a lot worse if you'd collected a GT3 or two on your way off...

I decided earlier this year the insurance issues on the Ring mean I will only ever go again and drive it in one of those RentaRacecar things... either that or as a passenger.

Whoops! Glad you're ok though!

And Jason - that will just lead you to trying harder and harder as you won't know when you reach your target!

there is a 5k excess on those so ats not all as it first appears

Once your ok is the important thing, but dam expensive

Bad luck, glad you're OK.

Nope - The point is I will be disregarding the camera and any timing going on behind the scenes, and just driving for the fun, whilst ensuring full concentration and not pushing the car to the point of potentially losing it big time. Doubt I will ever do an 8:30 simply due to not wanting to stack the car (and having little ability :D)

cant beleive you need to pay for damage tho when you pay to drive round it? well a small fine should be enough but that is stupid lol

dont think ill bother goin jus in case.

billy

if the car has smashed a wheel i would get all suspension etc looked at closely..

unlucky but thats the chance you take with the ring..

what went wrong for the cars **** to come around?? driver error or part failure??

was you running good tyres etc etc

i will never go on the ring for this reason couldnt afford to repair the barrier let alone the car lol

when do you have to pay for the barrier??

no pics?

Ouch. Not good.

hope its still straight.

Thankyou all for your kind words, to answer as many questions as I can the tyres were Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics - the crash had nothing to do with these as they are an amazing tyre and the car was set-up and handling beautifully - it was simply a mistake on my part pusing to hard. To find the limit you have to cross it and that's what I did!

The barrier was paid for at the circuit - had to call my credit card company and get my limit increased!!

The suspension has been checked out, and is all good except a bent tie rod, and a damaged wheel bearing.

I did look at track day insurance but as has been said most policies require you to pay the first £5,000 of any claim so really not much use unless you acidentaly kill someone.

Does anyone know where I can get part diagrams from as I need to call Skoda to order parts?

give me a detailed list of what you need and your chassis number and i will take a look on etka.

Sorry to hear about the crash, at least its not you needing repaired, although your wallet probably will.

Online spareparts catalogue for AUDI/Volkswagen/Skoda/Seat

should get you well on the way to seeing what's required. :)

You will need to register a username/password to get access on the catalogue, but very useful once you have.

That's what I'm after - PERFECT. Thankyou .

At least I can point at the bits that are bent when ordering

Ouch, glad your ok. Also hope you can get the car on the road again soon.

Hope to drive on the Ring one day, but will be nowhere near the limits I can tell you. Think a 15 min lap will do.

Thats an expensive crash barrier!
