New or old.

Okay here are some options.

Looking at a car. It could be either a S reg Polo 1.0 or a newer Fabia/Polo a.n.other.

Given the saving (half the price) for the older model versus the newer stuff, the question rasied it thus:

Would you say it's better to spend less on an older well regarded make or more on a newer perhaps less well regarded make, eg kia piccalo thing?

Scenarios:

03 Fabia 1.4 versus some Kia thing

S reg Polo versus somthing else from Kia

etc etc

Not forgetting Daewoos offer of a free car for 6 months (effective) since they will replace with a new one after 6months.

Thoughts?

What's the reason for the other car Colin?

If it's a mileage reducer for the White beast, i'd go with the cheaper, older car.

If you pile the miles on, you won't lose as much.

Well I do pile the miles on an a FTO for 2k did catch my eye to be honest, but this is for the boss...her car her independance regained etc...saves using mine for everything, might accidentaly knock a hold in the cat aswell ;)

If it's for SWMBO get something new and cute. You don't want those phone calls when an older one breaks down. Been there ...

Older one and spend some of the cash saved on a holiday....and bits for your car :D

Her money, your advice ;)

Her money

New one then :)

Get her an older one, borrow the money she saved for your car

:):):):):)

New car ! Remember you get free AA cover with alot of new cars so that saves the phone call at 2am in the morning saying "I've run out of petrol" :D

I bought SWMBO and little Fiat Seicento thing is I love it cause it handles like a bloody skateboard. Great fun even though it's made of tinfoil :P

If it'sjust for a run-about I'd recommend a Toyota Yaris....approx

You might find you can get a newer, larger car (eg Mundano, Vectra) cheaper than a small one if you're going for an "S" reg Polo - they tend to hold their value too well !

Got RAC somthing or other cover for loads of peopl in the family, I've been in the RAC longer than I've been driving, although only ever called the AA ;)

Thanks for views. The polo is one lady owner from new so not too bad. Yaris was discussed I think. Size was a factor, but not vital, more metal more cash was the basic rule we applied...not totally true I know. We had a loan car (Colin shortned his estate) which was a 1.1 Saxo or a 1.0, was a bundle of fun in a totally different way to a big turbocharged Octy.

Definitely take a look at the Kia Picanto, you get a lot for your money, although my experience of Kia is "all that glitters is not gold". That said, the Picanto gets cracking write ups, certainly compared with the Rio/Shuma/Magentis.

Warrantied, hassle-free motoring, good kit, pretty good on safety for the size, etc.

Dirt cheap to buy, so you'll probably lose as much in depreciation as you would on most second-hand cars anyway!

Or howabout a Smart? :D

Suzuki Ignis :) or Citroen C2/C3 (free insurance and cashback).

Forgot to say, last month's Evo mag had a twin test of the 2 (C2 & Ignis Sport) :D

Avoid the S reg Polo as they are very overpriced, if you want that style of car look at a slightly newer P/R reg Seat Ibiza or Cordoba. For a 1.4 R reg Cordoba round here (Derby) going rate seems to be 1500 compared to 2000 to 2500 for the equivalent Polo.

Colin

Im with Jon here - try the Suzuki Ignis Sport (and don't worry you can get one without it being in yellow and with decals  ). Great small car with fun performance and there are some stonking deals on at the moment i.e. Norfolk Motor Group have got new ones for

Daihatsu YRV? Same peak power as a Fabia vRS, slightly prettier? :D
