cam belt change

Featured Replies

I have a Petrol Fabia Classic 8V 2001 at 85K miles and I'm guessing it needs a cam belt change. I can find lots of reference to toothed belt changes for diesel engines only, not petrol. I guess the question is does my car have a cam belt and will it need changing? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Im not an expert, but I had an 8v 1.4 2000 Fabia, and it has a camchain, not a cambelt. Whilst this can get quite rattly its not something that you need to replace at specified intervals.

Hope this helps.

RBW.

Do you have the service log book thing? As I'm pretty sure its outlined in there :) I'd check mine if it didn't require me going outside

For petrol models, it is only the 1.4 16v (DOHC) engine that have a cambelt. All the others have a chain to drive the cam.

I suppose, also, Hello and welcome to this forum.

Thanks for the replies. That's put my mind at rest. Might also explain why the engine has always been a little rattly. Thanks agin.

first of all, sorry to seem to hijack the thread, but thought i might as well piggyback rather than start a new one.

i currently have a fabia (comfort, i believe) 1.2 8V on a 03 Plate .after having a few things done to it previously, it is now having a new timing chain fitted this week. is this the same as the cambelt then, or is it something completely different? when i look under the bonnet i notice their is a belt driving about 6 / 7 pullys but not sure if this is the cambelt or not.

extra info.

Cam belt and timing chain do the same job I believe. Only a belt needs replacing so that it doesn't perish and snap causing lots of damage, whereas a chain shouldn't break, (although a mates Corsa has just suffered this) but will get increasingly rattly over time.

I think the belt you speak of will be for the alternator.

The only belt you have and the one you can see is the Auxiliary belt, used to be called the Fan belt, (Ribbed V-belt in your service book). The cam chain is made of metal and obviously will not perish unlike rubber ones.

Also your car will be a 1.2 6v not 8v as it has only 3 cylinders not 4.

thanks guys, and yes, it is just a 6v, not 8v, my mistake.

only reason i asked is because i took it in elsewhere before and they said my cambelt was due for changing, and quoted me about £120 just for the cambelt kit, not including fitting. not sure if they were trying to diddle me or not, however i'm getting a new one under my extended warranty now anyway...... lol.
